Background of the issue:
I am trying to translate post categories using WPML. The issue can be seen on this page: hidden link. Before installing WPML, the URLs structure was correct, and it remains correct on production sites.

Symptoms:
I expected to see a URL structure like: domain/language/taxonomy/parent-category/child-category, but instead, I see: domain/language/taxonomy/parent-category/parent-category,child-category. This issue occurs in all category URLs in both Italian and English. I have tried flushing the cache, saving permalinks, and other fixes.

Questions:
Why is the URL structure incorrect after installing WPML?
How can I fix the category URL structure to match the expected format?

Hi,

I'll continue to help you with this issue.

We suspect a collision with the theme or another plugin might cause this problem. If possible, get your site into a minimum environment, switching to a default WordPress theme like TwentyTwenty-Four and having no plugins activated except WPML.

First, you must check if the problem persists when just the theme is switched to TwentyTwenty-Four (for example). If it persists, deactivate all plugins except WPML and its add-ons. Then, please check if the problem persists. If it does not continue, start by activating the plugins individually and checking when the issue comes back, then report to me which plugin was the culprit.

**** Important! Please make a full site backup (files and DB) before you proceed with those steps****

*** If your site is live, you might want to try those procedures in a staging environment or a snapshot of your site on your local server or another server. ***

Regards,
Itamar.

Hi,
thanks for your reply.

We tried disabling the plugins and it worked. Unfortunately the plugin causing the issue is a core plugin for the theme so we cannot leave it disabled.
We will think about using redirects to solve the problem.

Could you help us with another issue?

When we translate a single post many different URLs are created. As an example, all the URLs below point to the same post.

hidden link

hidden link

hidden link

hidden link

This may cause problems with SEO, is there a way to have only the first URL working and the others go 404?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi,

Thanks for updating me on what you have found and how you will workaround it.

In our forum, we try to keep one issue per ticket. Therefore, I've split the other ticket and created a new ticket with this issue. Please see the new ticket here.
