This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
You are trying to update WPML Multilingual CMS 4.6.8 and WPML String Translation 3.2.8 to the newest version, but the update fails with an 'undefined' error message. You are concerned about the update causing the website to crash.
Solution:
We recommend re-registering your staging website to resolve the update issue. Please follow these steps:
1. Visit https://wpml.org/account/sites and remove the website from the list (if it's not listed, you can skip this step).
2. Add the website again and copy the newly generated key.
3. In your website's admin panel, go to Plugins > Add New > Commercial Tab and click on "Unregister WPML from this site".
4. Register the website again using the key you copied in step #2.

If this solution does not apply to your case, or if it is outdated, we highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If you still encounter issues, please open a new support ticket at WPML support forum.

Background of the issue:
I am trying to update WPML Multilingual CMS 4.6.8 and WPML String Translation 3.2.8 to the newest version. I previously avoided updating because version 4.6.9 caused the website to crash. I am currently attempting the update on a development site: hidden link. The production site is hidden link.

Symptoms:
Update failed: undefined.

Questions:
Why does the update fail with an 'undefined' error message?
How can I safely update WPML without crashing the website?

Hello there,

In this case, it's best to re-register the staging website. Please follow these steps:

1. Go to wpml.org/account/sites and remove the website from the list (if it's not listed, you can ignore this step);
2. Add it again and copy the newly generated key;
3. In your website's admin panel, go to Plugins > Add New > Commercial Tab and click on "Unregister WPML from this site";
4. Register the website again, with the key you copied in step #2;

That should solve it. Let me know how it goes.

Hello,
And it's not possible to use WPML on both sites (production and development), as is usual? Re-registering is unnecessary work.

Thanks
Best Regards

It is, but since you're having issues, I suggested this solution. Let me know if that solves the issue for you. Re-registering the website shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

This also shouldn't have any impact on your workflow.
