I'm discussing with my IT but it seems nothing is clear.
When adding a different domain (or subdomain in my case) per language:
1- If already exist the main website, can be changed from different langauges in directories to different domains? Or this only applies for clean installations?
2- Should I install same theme and plugin on the main site and subdomain or just on the main site?
3- If no themes and plugins on the subdomain, means there is no way to manage the subdomain language? No WP dashboard? So all is done via the main site?
4- Is the plugin that handles all the work or should be done any backend (domain/subdomain) configuration?
Sorry but I've tried all the possibilities but no way for the subdomain to be validated. And besides this my IT says that this should be done via backend configuration which for your explanation it seems is not like this.
while you wait for one my colleague to take over, let me try to help out.
1) Yes, it is possible, you can switch between different language URL settings.
2) You use only the main website, and 1 WP installation, everything stays the same the only difference is your 2nd language pages will show on domain2es.com instead as usual on domain1.com/es for example.
3) Yes, all is done via the main website, it is still the same website, just how 2nd language shows is different. As said this settings can be also changed later.
Please do not confuse this with multisite, as that is a completely different thing.
4) You should set up domains as explained in the docs on your hosing and then add it inside WPML settings. If validate doesn't confirm, you can uncheck it and then save settings and check manually on the frontend if it works fine, since sometimes the validate option can not confirm settings and it fails.
Hope this helps.
