Hi WPML Support Team,

I’m experiencing a critical issue with WPML Multilingual CMS on my site:

Website: hidden link

WPML version: 4.8.6
WordPress: 6.9
WooCommerce: latest
PHP: 8.1 (also tested 8.0)
Hosting: Shared hosting (PerfGrid)

❌ The problem

When WPML Multilingual CMS is active, my site enters recovery mode and throws a fatal error:

Allowed memory size of 536870912 bytes exhausted
Error in:
/wp-content/plugins/sitepress-multilingual-cms/classes/utilities/class-debug-backtrace.php
Line 137

Because of this:

WPML is automatically paused by WordPress

WooCommerce login / checkout flow breaks

Canonical URLs & language directories behave inconsistently

Customers report login issues at checkout

🔍 What I already checked

Memory limit is already 512MB

Disk space was close to full (I am cleaning backups & cache)

Error happens specifically when WPML is enabled

WooCommerce Multilingual is installed

Issue appears during normal page loads, not only admin

❓ What I need help with

Is this a known issue with WPML 4.8.6 + PHP 8.1?

Are there recommended WPML settings to reduce memory usage?

Should WPML debug/backtrace be disabled?

Is there a compatibility issue with WooCommerce I should address?

Do you recommend PHP 8.0 over 8.1 for stability?

I want to continue using WPML, but currently it makes the site unstable.

Thank you in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Zahid

Hello!

That issue you're experiencing is not normal and there is no known issue with WPML and php 8.1 at the moment.

It's very likely this issue is happening because of something else (a plugin compatibility issue is my best guess so far). Can you please enable the debug log while WPML is enabled or if you have one already check if there are notifications, warnings or other errors near that memory issue in the debug log?

The memory limit error usually shows you the last thing the system could do before failing and it's very likely that the place where the error is, changes (it just means it failed to do one task because of the memory).

Would it be possible for you to enable WPML for a moment and send us the debug information to see if you have any plugin or something else that could show us if there's any plugin combination that have known issues?

Here's how you can do so: https://wpml.org/faq/provide-debug-information-faster-support/

Also, do you have a y custom code on your end? Any snippet or modified template page?
