Background of the issue:
I am trying to select Menu Sync in WPML.

Symptoms:
I encountered a Gateway Timeout error. The gateway did not receive a timely response from the upstream server or application.

Questions:
Why am I getting a Gateway Timeout when trying to use Menu Sync?
How can I resolve the Gateway Timeout error in WPML?

Thanks for contacting us. A gateway timeout error is usually related to the server's limited resources. I'd suggest checking with your hosting provider about this.

Also, you can try debugging the performance issues using the method here https://wpml.org/faq/how-to-debug-performance-problems/ .

My site is fine, no issues reported, the only issues is using menu sync. It normally takes a few minutes to come up, the php timeout is 5 minutes, the gateway timeout occurs in 2minutes 30 seconds. I have 12 additional languages besides English.

The debugbar didn't help show anything at all.
