This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: The client wants to manually translate all products and encountered an issue where changes made in one language were also affecting the duplicated product in another language. Solution: If you're experiencing this issue, we recommend that after duplicating the product, you should press the Translate Independently button. This can be done by opening the product in the default WordPress Editor or in the Classic Translation Editor. For more details on using different translation editors, you can visit the following documentation links:
If this solution does not resolve your issue or if it seems outdated or irrelevant to your case, we highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If further assistance is needed, please open a new support ticket at WPML support forum.
This is the technical support forum for WPML - the multilingual WordPress plugin.
Everyone can read, but only WPML clients can post here. WPML team is replying on the forum 6 days per week, 22 hours per day.
The customer wants to manually translate all products. My first understanding of WPML was that I could duplicate the french products and juste copy paste the english text that my customer sent me into the duplicata to make the english version.
When I try, as I just did, it seems that whatever I change in one changes in the other... I must be doing it wrong.... Please advise as to how I could do this. I don't want to use the "Translation" function in the product edit panel, it would be too long to translate it that way (one sentence at a time).
Thank you for contacting WPML Support. When you duplicate a post/product in a secondary language, it starts Sync from the default language post/product, when you make any change in the default language post/product it Sync in the secondary language automatically.
If you want to translate the post/product independently after duplicating it, please make sure to press the Translate Independently button by opening the product in the default WP Editor or in Classic Translation Editor as you can see in the attached screenshots.
Noman, when I do either of them, I don't get to translate the additional tabs at the bottom of the Edit product page. In fact, I don't even see the data I had put in initially on the french pages. It's all grayed out.
It seems this is expected behavior with the default WordPress Editor. We recommend using the WPML Translation Editor for translating the products as it syncs product fields correctly.
Here’s what I did to test the product in the Classic Translation Editor:
1. Selected “Classic Translation Editor” from WPML >> Settings > Translation Editor.
2. Opened the D6800002 product in Edit mode: hidden link
3. Enabled the WPML Translation Editor from the Languages metabox.
4. Clicked the English translation icon to load the product in the WPML Translation Editor, where custom tab fields were available for translation (see attached screenshot).
After testing, I re-enabled the Advanced Translation Editor from WPML >> Settings > Translation Editor.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue or if you need further assistance with this issue.
I can probably live with that solution. I will make a dozen products or so and see if its a viable solution in the long run and get back to you. Can you keep this thread going for a few days?
Also, I was told this morning that the "wishlist" page doesn't show up anymore since I installed the WPML plugin... Do you think it has anything to do with your plugin or should I start looking elsewhere for the source of that problem? Let me know your thoughts on this.
Thank you for your feedback. Yes, we can keep this thread open for a few days.
Regarding the "wishlist" page issue, as you are using the Savoy theme, can you please make sure you have followed the step-by-step instructions from this doc: hidden link
If the issue persists, please feel free to create a new chat/ticket for this new issue and we would be more than happy to help.
