Background of the issue:
I am experiencing very slow page loads on my site hidden link. Within the last 3 days, page loads have increased to 20-30 seconds from the previous 1-2 seconds. No new plugins or code changes have been added recently. When WPML Multilingual CMS is deactivated, page loads return to 1-2 seconds. Reactivating WPML CMS causes page loads to degrade again to 20-30 seconds. The following WPML extensions are installed: WPML Multilingual CMS (version 4.6.13), WPML Media Translation (version 2.7.4), WPML String Translation (version 3.2.14), WPML SEO (Version 2.1.0). My WordPress version is 6.6.1, and my PHP version is 8.2.19 with a memory limit of 512M.

Symptoms:
Page loads on the site are taking 20-30 seconds when WPML Multilingual CMS is activated.

Questions:
Why are page loads significantly slower when WPML Multilingual CMS is activated?
How can I resolve the slow page load issue caused by WPML Multilingual CMS?

Hi,

thanks for contacting us.

What time load do you experience if you deactivate all plugins except WPML?

Hi Laura,

Thanks for your reply.

All plugins were deactivated, except WPML. Load times were normal.

Each plugin was then reactivated, one by one. After all plugins were reactivated, no conflict emerged, and load times were normal.

It seems that deactivating, and then reactivating the plugins, resolved the issue.

What could have caused the issue? Updating to the most recent WP version maybe?

Any thoughts?

Thank you!

Hi!

Thank you for the update. It's good to hear that after deactivating and reactivating all the plugins, the load times returned to normal. This type of issue can sometimes occur due to a variety of factors. Sometimes, old cached data can cause performance issues. Deactivating and reactivating plugins can clear and refresh the cache, resolving the issue.

Apart from that, deactivating plugins can sometimes force a reset of certain database queries or connections that may have been causing delays. This can optimize the database and improve load times.

If you recently updated to the latest version of WordPress, some plugins might have required a reinitialization to align with the new WP core files. This process could have been completed during the reactivation, hence resolving the load time issue.

It’s a good practice to ensure that all your plugins and themes are updated to their latest versions, especially after a WordPress core update. Keeping everything updated reduces the risk of conflicts and performance issues.

I hope the issue will not happen again, but please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions!

Best regards,
Prosenjit
