Tell us what you are trying to do?
I migrated this site from Polylang to WPML.
I am trying to edit the translation of pages that were already in English but in most cases the ATE does not open. In case it does open, the English text is missing in ATE.

Furthermore I notice the backend has become very slow. Much slower compared to Polylang.
Memory is set to 512M

Advanced Translation Editor Error Logs contain the following record:
Date: 2023/08/09 8:59:53 AM
Event: ATE Server Communication
Description: Gateway Timeout
WPML Job ID: 0
ATE Job ID: 0
Extra data: {"url":"https:\/\/ate.wpml.org\/api\/wpml\/languages\/mappings","requestArgs":{"method":"GET"},"status":504}

I've already tried making a change to the default language and try again. Made no difference.

Another problem (that might be related, perhaps not) is that at WPML > Languages under Language URL format I tick the box 'Validate on save' and it says it is invalid, but that is not the case.

What is the link to your site?

My second issue has been resolved.

It turned out I also had to modify the AAAA DNS records for my secondary domain. After doing that is says valid. But the primary issue persists and when clicking "Edit English" the site starts using lots of server resources.

Hi Lars,

Thank you for contacting WPML support, I'd be happy to help you with this issue.

If you migrate the data from Polylang to WPML, that means the translation content is translated manually on your site, and the translated content will not show on the Advanced Translation Editor. Because it is not saved to the Translation Memory on our server. Please read more about this case in the documentation
https://wpml.org/faq/why-arent-my-translations-showing/#translation-memory-faqs
https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/how-wpml-keeps-track-of-your-translations/

We can handle one issue per ticket only so I will split this ticket into a new one for the second issue with backend slow.

Look forward to your reply.
Thanks

Ok, thank you for explaining.
To be honest I had higher expectations from the migration tool then.
I expected it could import the texts to ACE.

I even had three issues in one topic. The open question still is:
"I am trying to edit the translation of pages that were already in English but in most cases the ATE does not open."
I now understand why the pages that do open are empty, but some don't open at all.

Hi,

Please let me know a specific page that you want to translate but the ATE does not open, and share some screenshots of the issue.

Then I would like to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site to take a better look at the issue. It would be better to have a testing site where the issue is replicated. Your next reply is set to private to share the info.

❌ IMPORTANT: Please backup your database and website before proceeding ❌
You can use this plugin to create the backup:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/
✙ I would need your permission to de-activate and re-activate Plugins and the Theme to change configurations on the site if needed. This is also a reason the backup is critical.

Look forward to your reply.
Thanks

Can't make a duplicate at the moment due to server resources. Will solve that and will update.

Let’s keep this one open. I think I start to understand the problem.
The process of opening the front page in the ACE causes an error and consumes all server resources until it runs out and crashes. Migrating to a bigger server did not help.
My theory is that it has to do with the fact that in Polylang each language had a dedicate page. Have thoughs on how to test and resolve this. Will try that and share the results

Yes, I managed to resolve the issue.
The problem was indeed that there was a 'hardcoded' linked front page.
If I tried editing the secondary language page and received the normal message that it should be done via the translation editor.
I created a new front page and deleted the two that were migrated from Polylang. After that I could add the translation via the ACE and also performance is good again.
