Background of the issue:
I am trying to resolve an issue where the background image on my WordPress site displays differently across the translated versions created with WPML. Additionally, I cannot find or install the WPML Media Translation add-on to manage translated images separately. Link to a page where the issue can be seen: hidden link

Symptoms:
The background image behaves inconsistently across translations (German and Italian). The same image appears enlarged and cut off, even though I’ve uploaded images with different sizes for the translated versions. WPML seems to be duplicating the original image for all translations rather than allowing independent control of the image settings for translations. I couldn’t find the WPML Media Translation add-on in my WPML downloads or in my WordPress installation.

Questions:
How can I ensure consistent background image scaling across all language versions?
Where can I find or how can I install the WPML Media Translation add-on?

Dear Support Team,

I am writing to update you on the ongoing issue with WPML Media Translation and its handling of images across different language versions of my site.

Current Findings:

German Set as Original Language:
Despite setting English as the default language in WP admin, German is still shown as the original language for images in the Media Translation section. This inconsistency persists even after re-uploading images under English.

Edits Are Not Applied Per Language:
When I upload an image for one language (e.g., English) and make edits (e.g., resizing, cropping, or positioning) specifically for another language version (e.g., German or Italian), these edits are not applied. The images remain shared across versions, and the changes do not reflect per language.

Commands Not Responding:
Any adjustments to images (e.g., resizing, moving, or specific settings) for individual versions do not take effect. The system seems to disregard these commands.

Workaround for Now:
I am currently using the original large-sized image across all language versions as a temporary workaround. This approach avoids uploading multiple copies of the same image, which would slow down the site.
However, this is not a sustainable solution. When building the entire site, I will need to edit images independently for each language without affecting others.

Request for Solution:
I need guidance on how to:

1.Ensure that images can be edited independently for each language version without requiring separate uploads of multiple copies, which would slow down site performance.

2.Address why German is still showing as the original language despite setting English as the default in WPML.

This issue is critical for building a fully functional multilingual site. Currently, even duplicating or uploading separate images per language doesn’t resolve the problem, as edits and settings are still not applied independently.

Thank you for your assistance. I look forward to your guidance to resolve this.

Hi,

Editing images in the media library will not cause them to change for the background image set by Elementor. Also, using the Media translation add-on to replace the image will not work because the background image is set with a CSS directive. Please see the attached screenshot. The approach you must take to achieve what you want is to use a different design for the translations. Please read about it here.

https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/using-different-translation-editors-for-different-pages/#how-to-get-different-designs-for-different-translations

Please note that if you created the translation with WPML's Translation Editor, you must trash the translated page, delete it permanently, and then start again with the above method.

**** Important! Please make a full site backup (files and DB) before you proceed with those steps****

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Regards,
Itamar.

Thanks for your reply. Here are my feedback questions:

1. The background image on the translated pages doesn’t align the same way as on the original page. I understand background images are controlled via CSS in Elementor, but I don’t know why the translations behave differently.
Why does the background image on translated pages not match the positioning of the original? Can this be fixed without duplicating the page, unlinking the design nor coding?

2. I’d like to avoid unlinking pages if possible. I wonder if changing the image dimensions or aspect ratio on the original page would help ensure it displays correctly on translations.
Can resizing or adjusting the original image dimensions ensure consistent positioning across translations without unlinking?

3.If my above alternatives are not feasible, I want to confirm if I must delete the translated page first or if I can duplicate the original page and then delete the translation without causing issues.

4. I understand background images require unlinking to change independently, but I’m unsure if this applies to other Elementor settings.
Are Elementor settings (e.g., margins, positions) on translated pages read-only unless unlinked, or is this limitation specific to background images?

Thanks upfront!

Silvia

Hi, Silvia.

Based on what you initially wrote, my understanding of the problem was the opposite of what you explained in your last reply. I'm sorry if I'm at fault. I now understand that you want to show the same background image on the original page and its translations. If you follow our guide on how to work with Elementor, this should be the result. Please check our Elementor guide here.
