This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client wanted to know if the pre-configured Chinese (Traditional) in WPML is the same as Yue Chinese (Cantonese written in traditional Chinese) and how to add Yue/Cantonese as a custom language for automatic translations, as it is not currently supported by WPML.

Solution:
We clarified that Yue or Cantonese is indeed different from the Chinese Traditional (zh-Hant) supported by WPML's automatic translation. WPML supports Chinese Traditional via Microsoft translation engine, but Yue or Cantonese (Traditional) is recognized as a different language by Microsoft Translator.

To add Yue as a custom language in WPML, we recommended the following guides:

If the custom language is similar to an existing language, it can be mapped to a supported language to utilize spellcheck and automatic translation features. If there is no similar supported language, the client should select "Don't map this language" and will need to translate content manually.

If this solution is not relevant due to being outdated or not applicable to your case, we recommend opening a new support ticket. We also highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins.

Tell us what you are trying to do?
General inquiry about Chinese (Traditional)

Is there any documentation that you are following?
No

Is there a similar example that we can see?
No

What is the link to your site?
hidden link

My main question is whether the pre-configured Chinese (Traditional) is the same as Yue Chinese which is Cantonese written in traditional Chinese.

From my own research, they are different from each other, but I wanted to double check with your team to see if I can use Chinese (Traditional) as Yue Chinese or if I have to add it as a custom language.

Thank you

Hi,

Thank you for contacting the support.

I discussed with my team and turns out that Yue or Cantonese is different than what's supported by WPML's automatic translation.

WPML supports Chinese Traditional (zh-Hant) via Microsoft translation engine, while Chinese Simplified (zh-Hans) via Microsoft and DeepL translation engines (hidden link) - and - are pre-configured (https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/language-setup/pre-configured-languages/).

While looking at Microsoft Translator docs, Yue or Cantonese (Traditional) is recognized as a different language:

So, in theory, you'd need to add Yue as a custom language in WPML. I'll recommend checking following guides when adding and using custom languages and automatic translation:

- https://wpml.org/documentation/automatic-translation/how-to-change-automatic-translation-engines/

Regards.

Hi there,

thank you for the resources.

How would I go about adding Yue/Cantonese traditional to the mapping dropdown when adding a custom language because currently it is not supported for automatic translations via the plugin.

However, I see that it is a language listed in the microsoft links you provided.

Thank you,

If your custom language is similar to an existing language, you can map the languages together. This lets you use the existing language’s spellcheck and automatic translation for your custom language.

When creating your custom language, you can map it to a similar, supported language. This allows you automatically translate your content into the supported language. Then, when reviewing the translations, you only need to make minor changes instead of translating it all from scratch.

However, if it there's no supported language listed to chose from, then you can select "Don't map this language". In this case, you will not be able to use WPML’s automatic translation or spell check features but 'll have to translate manually.

See https://wpml.org/documentation/automatic-translation/using-automatic-translation-with-custom-languages/ for details.
