Background of the issue:
I am setting up the WPML plugin and I am at the point where it asks how I would like to format my site's URL. I have registered both domains and have a site key already. Both our domains are internal only, so they won't find a DNS record.
Symptoms:
While adding a domain for the French language, I am getting the following error: The domain you have entered is invalid.

Why am I receiving an 'invalid domain' error when adding a domain for the French language in WPML?
