This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem:
The client needed to change the language code on their website but was unsure how to proceed.
Solution:
We informed the client that it is not possible to directly change the language code. Instead, we recommended a multi-step process:
1. Add a new language to the site.
2. Duplicate the content to the new language.
3. Delete the old content and the old language.
We also provided a link to our FAQ for detailed instructions: https://wpml.org/faq/how-can-i-assign-or-change-language-code-to-existing-content/.
