This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client needed to change the language code on their website but was unsure how to proceed.

Solution:
We informed the client that it is not possible to directly change the language code. Instead, we recommended a multi-step process:
1. Add a new language to the site.
2. Duplicate the content to the new language.
3. Delete the old content and the old language.
We also provided a link to our FAQ for detailed instructions: https://wpml.org/faq/how-can-i-assign-or-change-language-code-to-existing-content/.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting the support.

It is not possible to change the language code directly. Changing the language code requires you to follow a multi-step process.

This involves adding a new language, duplicating the content to the new language, and erasing the old content and the language.

Please check this FAQ for details: https://wpml.org/faq/how-can-i-assign-or-change-language-code-to-existing-content/.

Regards.

That's "hreflang" code, you can change it for SEO reason, see the details table on each field at https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/language-setup/editing-wpmls-languages-table/#language-configuration-fields-defined.

Please note that, the red one you mentioned ("Code" column) can not be changed. See https://wpml.org/faq/how-can-i-assign-or-change-language-code-to-existing-content/ for details as mentioned earlier.

For the "hreflang" what do you see when change and save it?
