1. Add a list block
2. Add a row with the text "Office& nbsp;365" (disregard space after &)
3. Publish, notice that non breaking space is added correctly
4. Create translation using ATE, <wpml_nbsp> not shown in translation as usual
5. Translation is "Office 365" without non breaking space

Hello,

If you would like to translate raw HTML you might better use the Classic Translation Editor instead, as ATE does not output HTML.

When testing ATE now I do not see an issue with markers for bold text, italic text, or links and in your example using &nbsp appears to be somehow redundant.

In fact, I am aware that there exists or existed a marker called <wpml_nbsp> but I am not sure if it is expected to be set when using Gutenberg in such cases like in your example.

Do you mean that just some time ago when using Gutenberg the marker <wpml_nbsp> used to always be set in such a case by ATE?

In fact, the marker is not appearing on ATE when using Gutenberg, and the "&nbsp" is not found on the translation in the backend.

But I do not really see any issue, as the ATE is converting "&nbsp" correctly.

Do you have an example where this behavior actually breaks the format of the translation?

Best regards
Andreas

If you inspect the first list item under Whitepapers on my original in Swedish (hidden link) you should see that Office 365 has non breaking space.

In the English translation (hidden link) the non breaking space is removed so that "Office 365" breaks after Office instead of before Office.

Hello,

This is because the English text is one character longer than the Swedish version and the width of the list item causes a line break in the Desktop layout.

You can further see that the line break does not occur on mobile view.

You can solve this by applying this custom CSS rule:

.entry-content li {
    width: 500px;
}

Andreas

I understand that but the point with adding non breaking spaces is to make sure that your content line breaks nicely regardless of the width of the parent container. If WPML removes non breaking spaces from translations that makes for a poor experience.

Hello,

My apologies if I did not explain myself clearly enough.

The cause is the CSS of the Gutenberg List Block.

You would have the same line-break at this point with any other text as well.

The "&nbsp" can not overrule the CSS of the page's layout.

Please see the screenshot attached and let me know if you do have further questions.

Best regards
Andreas

If you look in the highlighted a tag you can see that the "&nbsp" has been removed in this translation. I know that these will overrule the CSS and make the box wider, but it will break in a way that is more readable.

Now it is like this:
Document management best practices in Office
365

What I expect with non breaking space:
Document management best practices in
Office 365

Hello,

According to your example, you need to use a <br> tag for breaking the line.

hidden link

Example:

<li>Document management best practices in<br>
Office 365</li>

Non-Breaking Space

&nbsp

is an HTML character, which may appear as " " and it tells a web browser to create a space between two words without going to the next line.

See screenshot for HTML input and output comparison.

Hello,

Additional to my last message:

I will further test the behavior of the <wpml_nbsp> marker with page builders and WordPress Classic Editor and consult our ATE team about this issue.

Once I have more details, I will be in contact.

Best regards
Andreas

Hello,

Thank you for your patience while I have been looking into this issue.

I was able to recreate that the non-breaking space character is removed once we open a translation inside ATE and then replaced the character inside the page's source code with an empty string.

This should get solved by our ATE team by including the marker for this purpose shortly.

I have escalated the issue to our team and I will be in contact with you once I received further feedback.

Best regards
Andreas

Yes. It seems that the translation without <wpml_nbsp> is stuck in translation memory and I cannot get rid of it.

Maybe I'll need to replicate your site locally. For this, I’ll need to temporarily install a plugin called “All In One WP Migration” on your site. This will allow me to create a copy of your site and your content. Once the problem is resolved I will delete the local site. Let me know if this is ok with you.

IMPORTANT

Hello,

I have opened the Translation Editor for the given page and I do sadly not quite understand what you are expecting to see?

When it comes to Translation Memory, then usually it gets overwritten once you edit the translation and save it.

Could you please provide me an exact example of what you are trying to achieve in which text segment?

Best regards
Andreas
