This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client is trying to add Argentine (Spanish) and Taiwanese languages to their WordPress site using WPML, but these specific language options are not available by default.
Solution:
To add custom languages in WPML:
1. Navigate to WPML → Languages.
2. Click on 'Edit Languages'.
3. Scroll down and click 'Add Language'.
4. Enter the details for the custom language and save.
For more detailed guidance, please visit: Editing WPML's Languages Table

If you are setting up languages per domain, ensure that:
1. Your domains are configured to show the same website without redirections when WPML is disabled.
2. Re-enable WPML and select the 'language per domain' option. If it doesn't validate, uncheck the box and save.
For additional help, see: Language Setup

Note: The 'hreflang' attribute is used only for loading translation files and does not affect other website functionalities. If issues persist, consider resetting the language settings in WPML > Support > Troubleshooting > Reset Languages option.

Background of the issue:
I am trying to add different languages to my WordPress site using WPML. Specifically, I want to add Argentine (Spanish) and Taiwanese (TW).

Symptoms:
The languages Argentine (Spanish) and Taiwanese (TW) are not supported. Only Spanish (.es) is available, not Spanish (.ar).

Questions:
How can I add Argentine (Spanish) language support?
How can I add Taiwanese (TW) language support?

This is not helpful unfortunately:

I added the argentine language (Spanish).
Want to redirect to my .ar domain.

.ar is not valid or language code already exist.

tried SP_AR but then if I want to put "A different domain per language" it says not valid if I put there my .AR domain.

Can you explain me exactly what I do wrong and if there's a solution.

So spanish language and a .AR domain.
I don't have a .ES domain BTW so it's not duplicate content.

Thank you in advance!

Taiwanese is not possible, because you don't support Taiwanese (DEEPL doesn't support it). So no way to add Taiwanese automatically right? Only by manual translation right?

Hello,

I am not 100% sure I understand your issues, as I can understand you have created custom language correctly?

You are mentioning different steps and procedures:

1) First for custom language you need to add it as I explained above. I suggest you first solve this and make sure you have created the language you wish.

2) To use language per domain, you first need to make sure you have working domains. You should disable WPML, and configure domains to show the same website, without redirecting, and when WPML is disabled they work fine, open and show the same website. If you need help with this you should contact your hosting support.

Then you can enable wpml and choose the language per domain option, if it doesn't validate you can uncheck that box and save either way.

Hope this makes sense.

I have working domains and created the language I wish

Okay let's take it step by step.

I want the hreflang to be AR (.AR)

When I create new language and I do this it says:

"The hreflang already exists."

Maybe because of ARAB country or whatever. (?)

SEE image, what is wrong, please help

Hello,

hreflang is only used for loading of translation files for that language, if you have any PO files, it doesn't show or affect anything else on your website.

Since it is a custom language you can use whatever you wish. I am not sure if you have any other languages that already use that hreflang. You can try to save something else, like es_ar.

Otherwise, after backup, you can try to reset the language and add any language, and custom one again, maybe something is interfering. (WPML > Support > Troubleshooting > Reset Languages option)

Hello,

that is correct you can not add ar, which is already used for the Arabic language.

You need some customs that are unique and specific to your custom language.

Thank you for finally saying that.

Can I connect my .AR (ARGENTINE) domain now or not. Is there any way. It's not validated because your system things it shouldn't be an argentine domain...

.ar
