Background of the issue:
We are developing a site and want to use WPML only for translating specific pages. We have Translation Mode set to 'Translate What You Choose'.

Symptoms:
WPML is automatically translating some of the links in our menu even though auto-translate is disabled. For example, one of our menu links is Resources (english page url) and we also want Recursos en Español (spanish page url). When I switch to Spanish as the page language though, you see Recursos en Español twice as it's translating the menu text. We do not want the plugin to translate anything except what we set on pages.

We also want /es/ pages without translations to redirect to the root English page for SEO purposes.

Questions:
How can we prevent WPML from automatically translating menu links?
Is there a way to set up redirects for /es/ pages without translations to the root English page?

Hi Jason,

Thank you for contacting WPML support, I’m happy to help you with this issue.

You can go to Appearance > Menus > Switch to Spanish language and create a translation menu manually. Please follow the documentation
https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/translating-menus/#fully-custom-create-menus-manually

If you want to create a page in the Spanish (second) language, which is not a translation page, you can switch to the Spanish language and create a page as you create a page in English. Please check the attached screenshot.

Looking forward to your reply.
Thanks

We do not want to manage two sets of menus (actually much more than that as we use a mega-menu system). Is there no way to disable translation of menus?

Hi,

By default, the menu items in the second language are automatically adjusted by WPML if there is a translation post/page of the menu item.
You can manually create an empty menu in the Spanish language to not display the translation menu item. Or you can add any menu item to the translation menu as your requirements.

Looking forward to your reply.
Thanks
