[Resolved] Translated page get DELETED when changing a picture on original page
This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: The client reported a bug where content was being randomly erased when translating from one language to another using Elementor. The issue persisted even after creating new blank homepages and manually recreating them. The client's hosting provider and Elementor support suggested the issue might be related to WPML.
Solution: We recommended the following steps to troubleshoot the issue: 1. Keep the English page open after restoring it. 2. Edit the default language page using Elementor. 3. Change the image on the page. 4. Update the page. 5. Check if the English page remains unaffected.
Additionally, we advised the client to cancel any in-progress translation jobs in WPML-> Translation Management-> Jobs tab, as using multiple editors for translation is not recommended. We also provided a guide for manual translation with WPML and Elementor: Using different translation editors for different pages.
If the solution provided does not resolve the issue or seems irrelevant due to being outdated or not applicable to your case, we encourage you to open a new support ticket. We highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. For further assistance, please contact us in the WPML support forum.
This is the technical support forum for WPML - the multilingual WordPress plugin.
Everyone can read, but only WPML clients can post here. WPML team is replying on the forum 6 days per week, 22 hours per day.
Elementor and my hoster (WPX) supports have both told me it's highly likely the bug is coming from WPML, so here I am contacting you about it.
Elementor made me try create two new blank homepages and manually recreate them to see if the issue persists. It does.
WPX had scanned the website for malware and issues. Nothing found. Even when deactivating most plugins, the issue remain, so even the hypothesis of a 3rd party incompatibility has been put aside.
The bug is present on the live website (shown in video: bulgarimot.bg) and the staging version (staging.bulgarimot.bg).
I can give you admin credentials to the staging version so that you can replicate the bug yourself. The only way after is to restore backup, because the translated page seems completely deleted.
Please help me fix this blocking bug, no work can be done on the website until we're sure content aren't being erased randomly from a translation to another.
Please note that I had a somewhat similar bug 2 weeks ago, that only a restoration backup "fixed", I had English strings (in the search module on top bar) being replaced by Bulgarian strings on English page, that was my last support ticket btw. None has been able to help. Yet there's clearly something going wrong on this website and we need to find what it is precisely to be sure it will never happen again.
Thanks for contacting WPML forums support. I'll be glad to help you today.
I would need to look closely at your site, so I would need to request temporary access (WP-Admin and FTP) Preferably to a test site where the problem has been replicated.
Your answer will be private, meaning only you and I can access it.
❌ Please backup your database and website ❌
✙ I need your permission to deactivate and reactivate the plugins and themes and change site configurations. This is also why the backup is critical.
✙ I also need your permission to take a local copy of your site to debug the issue without affecting your live site.
I think it's helpful, yet you haven't tried with the exact same picture that trigger the bug (screenshot).
I wonder if a corrupted file image can trigger such a bug, and if so, how can I prevent that and how does it work with WPML.
It's important for me to know because someone in my team also reported some issues with slugs from some images, I didn't had the time to check precisely yet but it might be related to the same root cause.
Please try with the problematic picture and tell me what you see.
Thank you very much for your attention to details.
What I notice, is that you keep the English page open in Elementor, I wondered if this is what prevent it to be deleted actually.
I've been replicating each of the same steps exactly on live version, yet without keeping Elementor editor open on English webpage, and there we go, the issue isn't fixed as you can see in video:
Well, I see that the English version is correct but I've been able to do that as well by keeping the English homepage open in Elementor. So that doesn't help me understand where the problem might be from.
Is that what you did? Kept the English homepage open and updated it again after it was screwed up?
Also, I see the status of translation of the Bulgarian homepage is marked as "completed" now.
Is that what you did to fix it? Was that the cause of the problem and should I check for pages "in progress" when there's such a bug again?
1) I kept the English page open for the first time to restore it. After that, I closed the English page and changed the default language image twice, which didn't overwrite the English page.
Please try the following steps:
1- Edit the default language page using Elementor
2- Change the image
3- Update it
4- Check the English page
2) You translate your content using Elementor, not the WPML translation editor, so please go to WPML-> Translation Management-> Jobs tab and cancel the in-progress jobs.
