This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client is experiencing a 'Critical error notification' when trying to configure the WPML plugin on a site using an older ThemeRex Prolingua theme. The client has raised the memory limit to 256MB, which resolved a memory limit issue, but the critical error persists even after deactivating all plugins and switching to the default WordPress Twenty Seventeen theme. The client's PHP version is 5.6.40, and the WordPress version is 6.2.3, due to the older theme's limitations.

Solution:
We recommend that the client upgrades the PHP version to 7.4 or greater after ensuring a full site backup is in place. This is necessary for the better performance of WordPress and WPML. Upgrading to PHP 7.4 or greater fixed this error. We also suggest upgrading WordPress to version 6.4.2 to check if the issue still exists. It is important to note that the Ozisti theme from ThemeREX is included in the WPML compatible list of themes, but it has not been tested since 2021. For more details, please refer to the following documentation:

Dear WPML crew,

I have purchassed your WPML plugin for my site – in order to make it multilingual. The site runs a pretty old ThemeRex Prolingua theme. According to the author the theme itself is compatible with WPML but I am still experiencing problems during the plugin installation. After downloading OTG installer from my account I am able to install WPML plugin as well as WPLM strings plugin but when I try to configure the WPML itself, I get a 'Critical error notification' (screenshot provided).

Because I am running an older theme I am not able to update the PHP pass the 5.6.40. because the theme doesn't function with PHP newer than that. Consequently I can't update WordPress pass its 6.2.3. version. I am running the latest version of the theme and all plugins are updated to the last version that is allowed in regard to running on the outdated PHP version.

I have manually raised Memory limit to 256MB – and that solved the memory limit red flag. But I still can't get the WPML to work. (Screenshot of the dashboard WPML provided).

I have deactivated the Prolingua theme and activated WordPress Twenty Seventeen theme and deactivated all plugins – and I was still getting 'Critical error' notification when trying to configure WPML.

The theme should support WPML (in accordance with official documentation) and the site itself is compliant with the WPML's minimal requirements. I have done my best to make the theme and WPML work together and currently running low on fresh ideas about what to do. Could you please take a look at the site. Every help would be appreciated.

We have a request, please upgrade your PHP version to 7.4 or greater after a full site backup{mandatory}. The minimum required PHP version for the better performance of WordPress and WPML. Refer to the following article for more details.

Dear Bigul,

Thanks for the advice! I updated PHP to version 7.4. and was able to configure WPML. Interesting, I wasn't able to make my site run on PHP 7.0. but it worked just fine on PHP 7.4. It seems that the problem was incompatibility of my theme and PHP 7.0. In regard to that I was running a site on PHP 5.6. When I tried to update PHP to PHP 7.4. it succeeded and made WPML work just fine.

Tnx!
