Problem: The client is experiencing random '500 Internal Server Errors' on their website using WPML. The issue seems to be related to the .htaccess file being incorrectly modified by the plugin, particularly the 'RewriteRule' directives. The client's server provider identified syntax errors in .htaccess and suggested that WPML might be causing these errors. Attempts to fix the issue by following WPML's errata page did not resolve the problem, and the client also noted that their theme, DIVI, might be involved as it frequently calls
flush_rewrite_rules(true)
on the 'init' hook.
Solution: We recommend identifying which plugin is incorrectly using the
flush_rewrite_rules(true)
function too often, as this can cause the .htaccess file to be overwritten with incorrect rules. The client discovered that their theme, DIVI, was calling this function multiple times, which may lead to the issue. Removing the problematic class from the theme appears to have resolved the problem. If other clients are facing similar issues, they should check for plugins or themes that might be using the rewrite flush feature excessively and address it accordingly.
