[Resolved] Foreign language version of page not updating with latest image updated on base language
This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: The client is experiencing issues where an updated image on the base language page is not reflecting in the translated versions (e.g., French). Additionally, despite previous complete translations, the WPML ATE editor shows incomplete translations and requires re-translation of content that hasn't changed. Solution: 1. If you're experiencing similar issues with image updates not reflecting in translated pages, we recommend making a minor edit to the base language page (like adding an extra space) and then saving it. This should prompt an update requirement for the translations. 2. Re-edit the translation to ensure it reaches 100% completion. This process helps in syncing all content, including any text associated with images. 3. If the WPML ATE editor does not recognize previously translated content, it might be due to the content being translated using a different editor (like the Classic Translation Editor or manually via the WordPress editor). In such cases, ATE cannot reuse translations as it relies on its own translation memory stored on servers. 4. To resolve this, continue using the original translation method (Classic Editor or WordPress editor) that was used initially. If you switch to using the ATE editor for future translations, it will store and reuse translations automatically for subsequent changes. For further guidance, refer to these documentation links:

Background of the issue:
I am trying to update an image on the base language page of a new page created on my site hidden link. The page has been translated into foreign languages, such as French, using WPML.
Symptoms:
The updated image on the base language page is not reflecting on the foreign language version, such as French. When accessing the WPML translation option, the French page shows incomplete translations despite being previously translated.
Questions:
Why is the updated image on the base language page not appearing on the foreign language page?
Why does the French page show incomplete translations even though it was already translated?
Welcome to WPML support. I will answer the question before this ticket is assigned to one of my colleagues.
Would you please give us a screenshot? The products page has media and images in the French version.
I wonder what happens if you follow the steps below:
- Go to your Dashboard > Pages.
- Open the edit screen of the original page. You should see a pencil/circle/gear icon in the sidebar options under the "Languages" section.
- Make a small change, for example, add an extra blank space at the end of a sentence/paragraph.
- Save it.
- You should now see that a circular arrow appears beside the 2nd languages links, this means that an update is required.
- Edit the translation again and save it up to 100% translated.
I am afraid that is correct and expected each time you make a small change to default language you also need to re-translate / update translation and make sure to complete the job. This to make sure everything is in sync and translated, for example in this case there could be some image text that needs translation.
Please re-translate and let us know if that helps.
The issue us that I'm being asked to re-translate content that has already been translated and has not had any changes made to it.
Surely that can't be correct? If the only change that has been made is an image? I can't see why I would need to re-translate large portions of the page text that has already been translated?
See attached image of:
1) Base Language Page English.jpg
2) Foreign Language Page French.jpg
3) Translation Editor English to French.jpg - this is showing a number of empty parts that need translating and some entries that are still in the Base language (English), even though the French page is already translated.
Hopefully this helps explain my issue in more detail?
No, you don’t need to re-translate the same content if it has already been translated. If it was previously translated using the WPML ATE editor, the translations are stored in memory and will automatically be reused.
After checking on our side, I can see that on 15.08 the same page was sent for translation but was never completed — it stopped at 29%. This suggests that the page hasn’t actually been fully translated before. Could you please confirm with your client how the translations were added originally, and through which method/editor? Maybe it was manually or via Classic editor?
As this page has already been translated previously sometime ago, how do we get the rest of the content translated automatically if it stopped at 29%.
The only recent change was amending an image on the Base Language, but this change it not pulling through to the FL (in this example French). The rest of the page is correct in both Base Language and FL.
1) As I have mentioned in my last reply, I checked and can not find confirmation that this page was translated via ATE editor. That means, there is no translation memory saved that can be loaded from memory and applied to this content / page.
I have checked further and see this website was moved few times, so could be it was translated then but client during moving did not choose to also move memory rather decided to start fresh.
This memory can be easily merged from our side, but still after checking I can not find any translation job from our side for this page.
2) Can you check again with user, and maybe they have translated it originally with CTE editor or manually via WordPress editor?
If yes, then this explains the problem as different translation method do not share memory and this pages needs to be retranslated with ATE or you need to use method originally used to translate. If you translate with ATE, next time you make a change it will load the translation from memory.
I am afraid there is no record from our side, this page was not translated with ATE at some point.
The bit I don't understand is that the page is already translated. You can see in the English and the French screenshots that the content text on the page has already be translated.
However, when you click on the WPML ATE editor this page shows a number of the content items as not being translated.
Why can't the WPML ATE editor pick up the already translated page content, instead of needing to translate the whole page again?
ATE cannot detect or reuse translations if the content was not originally translated with the ATE editor.
The reason is that ATE stores translation memory on its servers and matches it with the original content, rather than loading it from the translated page in the database.
Therefore, if a page was translated using the Classic Translation Editor or the WordPress editor, ATE will not be able to pick it up—you would need to re-translate it with ATE.
Alternatively, you can continue using the method you originally used (Classic Editor or WordPress editor), and that will work just fine.
