This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client was experiencing issues with a new WPML SEO plugin that was breaking their site upon activation. They were also curious about why they now need to link menu items, a step that was not necessary before, possibly due to a WPML update.
Solution:
If you're experiencing similar issues with a new WPML plugin affecting your site, we recommend deactivating the plugin temporarily and testing it on a staging site, as the client did. This approach helps isolate the problem, potentially linked to PHP and SSL configurations, which the client resolved separately. For concerns about linking menu items that previously worked without linking, this might be due to recent updates in WPML. We suggest reviewing the change logs of recent WPML updates to understand any changes in functionality.

Please note that this solution might be outdated or not applicable to your specific case. We highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If the issue persists, please open a new support ticket at WPML support forum for further assistance.

Thank you so much Kor that makes sense. It now works but I would like to better understand why I now have to make that step to link them. The menu did work for a very long time without linking them, so why did that change? Would that have been in a WPML update?

Secondly I still need to resolve the new plugin from WPML that breaks my site when I activate it. Should I do that on a new ticket or continue with you?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your patience. May I know where I can see this issue? Also, if it on another site, please backup and share the Website WP admin access here using the private reply option.

Thanks for your reply. I've checked your Website and WPML is activated. May I know which plugin are you having issues with?

It was the new SEO plugin. I have tested it on the staging site and it now seems to be working, so maybe the issue was as mentioned before PHP and SSL which I resolved separately.

I think we can close the ticket. Thank you for your help.
Kind regards
