This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
If you're experiencing issues with double slashes (//) in your URLs for custom post types, which are being flagged as hreflang issues in your site crawls, this might be related to WPML's redirection functionality.
Solution:
First, verify if the double slashes appear when WPML is deactivated. This will help determine if the issue is directly caused by WPML or if it exists independently of it. If the double slashes still appear with WPML deactivated, the problem does not originate from WPML. It's also important to note that WPML correctly adds hreflang tags, and the issue of double slashes should not be confused with hreflang problems. If you need further clarification on why double slashes are flagged as hreflang issues by specific tools, you should contact the tool provider directly.

If this solution does not resolve your issue or seems irrelevant due to being outdated or not applicable to your specific case, we recommend opening a new support ticket. We also highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. When we investigated this and checked with WP engine tech team we found that the redirects are made by WPML: hidden link

Thanks a lot for your video! Videos always help to demonstrate a problem.

Yes, as you say, it may very well be that WPML's redirection is its native functionality.

Do you view this as a problem?

I ask this because, in my mind, WPML corrects here a problem that should not exist. The problem is the doubled slashes (//) before press-releases.

I asked you to check if the double slashes are there when WPML is deactivated.
Have you checked it?
If they are there when WPML is deactivated, then the problem is not caused by WPML.

WPML indeed adds the hreflang tags to the site. I don't know why hidden link flagged the doubled slash as an hreflang issue. You need to ask them. When I inspect the hreflang of the press-releases pages they look fine. They are being added as they should. Please see the attached screenshot.

In my mind, the doubled slashes are the problem and not the hreflang.
Please let me know if you find otherwise.

Regards,
Itamar.
