Background of the issue:
I am trying to resolve an issue where the site key for WPML is not working anymore. I saw a message in WP admin saying it could not connect to wpml.org. I went on my account, copied the key, went back to WP admin, 'de-registered' the site, clicked on 'register', pasted back the existing key, and it was not working. I tried again with a new key, but it still didn't work. The issue can be seen at hidden link.
Symptoms:
