[Resolved] WPML just keeps saving/loading but it never does
This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: The client reported that their website, which uses the ACF plugin, experiences freezing during the save process when WPML is active. The error message displayed is "Application did not respond in time." This issue does not occur when WPML is deactivated. Solution: We investigated the issue by testing without WPML, ACFML, and with a default theme. The problem persisted, indicating it is not solely related to WPML. We observed that the issue might be related to server resource limitations such as PHP memory limit or server response time. We recommend: 1. Checking the PHP error logs for detailed information on failures. 2. Consulting with hosting support to possibly increase server resources. 3. Considering an update to the PHP version. For issues related to slow performance or increased queries, we suggest consulting this carefully curated list of items. If the problem persists after improving server resources, and you suspect WPML might still be impacting performance, please let us know.
Please note that this solution might be outdated or not applicable to your specific case. We highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If the issue persists, we encourage you to open a new support ticket at WPML support forum.
This is the technical support forum for WPML - the multilingual WordPress plugin.
Everyone can read, but only WPML clients can post here. WPML team is replying on the forum 6 days per week, 22 hours per day.
Background of the issue:
Hello!
We have a fairly large website with many pages. The problem is that when a page contains a lot of fields (implemented using the ACF plugin), and a user makes even a minor change (for example, changing just one character), the page freezes during the save process. Eventually, the user sees the message: "Application did not respond in time."
When the WPML plugin is deactivated, the issue disappears — the page saves correctly.
We need someone from your support team to connect to the site and help resolve this issue.
Backups have been made, and the site is ready for debugging and fixing the problem.

Reference to our recen tchat, I've moved to this ticket. Please let me know when you're done updating everything and have tested with only WPML, String Translation, ACF and ACFML, and a default theme (as mentioned in the chat).
Well, I updated almost all plugins. And deactivated most of them. I can't deactivate some, for example, ACF fields because the entire site is built using them. Also, the Request Monitor plugin is installed on the site, which will show you what and where the site is loading. Switching the theme to the standard one did not give a result even before contacting the support service. Earlier, I sent all the accesses and would like to receive a private field from you to provide a test page on which you can reproduce the bug.
For the test, I activated all plugins except WPML.
With WPML Multilingual CMS disabled:
Page loading time is 1.98 sec, size is 47.3 MB, 37 queries.
After enabling only the WPML Multilingual CMS plugin, I firstly received the error - "The application did not respond in time". Secondly, a significant increase in time, size and number of queries:
Page loading time is 3.73 sec, size is 89.6 MB, 289 queries.
Thus, after activating the plugin:
Loading time increased by approximately 88.38%.
Size increased by approximately 89.43%.
Number of queries increased by approximately 681.08%.
I would like to draw your attention to the fact that this page has no translations.
Have you checked with your hosting or server support about increasing the resources? Because as per my previous observation, "The application did not respond in time" is even happening without WPML plugins (even for a fraction of a second).
Please note that in this very ticket, we're trying to resolve the said issue.
However, if you need more detailed help on slow performance or increased queries (and times) issue, I recommend opening a separate ticket/chat because as per forum policy we can only handle one issue per ticket. So you can get more to the point help, without mixing up several issues in one long ticket.
Please let me know about "The application did not respond in time" problem after improving server resources, so it does not happen without WPML and then we'll try our best to check further that how WPML is impacting the resources.
P.S.: The both issues refer to performance and I understand are connected. But these are considered different when specially one of the issue is happening even without WPML. That's why we need to fix this first and then move further.
Hello! We finally managed to fix this problem. Perhaps this solution will help someone save a couple of hours or days) of time. It was found that the problem occurs in the classic WordPress editor. There were no problems in Gutenberg.
