Hi, I am setting up a multisite network with independent e-shops. I am using Marketpress from WPMUdev together with many of their multisite plugins. I am interested in wpml in order to support a few languages in all network sellers sites, I just want to be sure that is compatible with WPMUdev plugins in a multisite subdirectory environment.
WPML works fine with MarketPress. We’re cooperating with the plugin author and making sure that things work correctly together. I’m not sure about all other plugins from WPMUdev, but I can tell you that their developers are happy to cooperate with us and we work together to make it all compatible.
WPML works smooth in multisite installs, so you shouldn’t have any problems too. In multisite, you will be able to use languages in directories or language-name arguments.
Hi,
I used Pagelines to build my site… does it work with WPML?
It’s possible to translate the text of custom posts used for the boxes you see in my homepage?
thank you!
Fabio
We’ve tested WPML with Pagelines and everything seems to be working fine for us. I don’t know what your homepage is and what texts you’re referring to. If you buy WPML, you’ll get direct technical support from our developers. We work with Pagelines developers to iron out any problem that people might report.
thank you for the rapid answer and the real support!
In my homepage I use “boxes”, a sort of custom post integrated in pagelines… If it’s possible to translate custom post I belive it’s possible to translate also “boxes”… can you confirm this?
thank a lot!
Fabio
WPML can translate custom post types. I’m going to ask Brooks, our support person who worked on Pagelines to contact you directly and see what you’re doing with these boxes. Maybe we’ll learn something new about Pagelines.
I just checked that thread and it doesn’t have any information about ‘portfolio’ theme. The best thing to do, to make that theme and WPML work correctly together is to get the Portfolio author interested and work together with us. Can you refer them here? http://wpml.org/documentation/theme-compatibility/go-global-program/
Hi, we’re building an online platform for a national show in India to be aired in the month of May. We’re planning to use WordPress MU as framework. Also, language requirements are Hindi & English. Is there any way we can get a demo of WPML before we decide to go with it? I have read in a .net magazine article that there is a free version available for WPML. We’d like to buy commercial plugin later. But a quick deployment on local with free version will be helpful. Thank you.
Sorry, but there’s no free or trial version of WPML. If you buy WPML and are not satisfied with it, we’ll refund your order. In practice, very few people ask for refunds. WPML and Disqus should work fine together.
You can translate all widget titles with WPML. Texts widgets translate using WPML’s String Translation. Some other widgets are multilingual by definition and some are not. What kind of widgets are you using?
Using WidgetKit plugin by YooThemes (YT). We’re also considering WPML. Specifically, YT’s Slideshow widget has an interface in the back-end to provide the content for the widget (i.e. doesn’t use posts for content). Am I correct in assuming that this is outside of the reach of WPML?
Would switching between languages allow you to switch out widgets somehow?
Also, we use some home-baked plugins to display posts in a grid-layout .. like a gallery. What would be involved in making this plugin work with WPML, so it uses posts matching the selected language?
The theme itself worked fine with WPML, but we have problems in the part with WidgetKit. The author didn’t seem interested in getting it to work with WPML. We’re be happy to work with YooThemes author on this, but we can’t do it on our own.
If your plugin uses just WordPress API, it should run fine with WPML. WPML hooks to WordPress API calls and adjusts them so that the correct results return per language.
WPML includes language detection. It uses the language preference header, set by the browser. In practice, some people enable the correct language settings and some leave it as default, according to where they downloaded the browser from.
hi,
i m wondering if the Cart66 plugin is supported with WPML. I want to make sure the payment instructions/processes featured by cart will be translated, is that the case?
Sorry, but we don’t have experience with that theme. Generally speaking, if the theme uses just the WordPress API calls, it will run fine with WPML. To be sure and to cover different configuration cases, it’s best to suggest to the theme authors to test it together with us. You can send them here: http://wpml.org/documentation/theme-compatibility/go-global-program/
I am going to build a new website with WP. My existing site is already translated into 3 languages. Is it possible to build one WP site – and have the languages setup so that the Visitor can choose his/her language and it displays inside the principal site layout. OR do I need to actually build 3 distinct WP sites to display the different lanaguages.
WPML makes a single WordPress install run with multiple languages – so you don’t need to administer several different sites. You might need to spend a bit of time migrating the different languages to the same install. The bulk of the work can be done with a script (to copy posts and meta), but some work will have to be manual.
Hello, we are considering buying a theme (http://themeforest.net/item/creator-business-wordpress-theme-html-template/636415) for our website to be used on wordpress.org which supports the WPML plugin, this is the first time we have heard of WPML and we have no knowledge of building a website and even less regarding the possible ways of translating a website. Is this plugin easy enough to be used by complete beginners?
Say for example I have the website in English and I want to somehow make the pages and menus available in Arabic and Spanish, do the buttons and menus automatically adjust to the size of the text in the case that the Arabic phrase/word might have more characters than the English phrase?
Thirdly, we will be translating the website ourselves; is it sufficient that we purchase the Multilingual Blog package? I don’t really understand what CMS refers to – but with the Multilingual Blog package, would I still be able to use perhaps different pictures for the “Spanish theme” than to the “English theme”.
We will work with them to see that everything works correctly and we’ll do whatever it takes to iron out any problems.
Most people choose the CMS package, even if they translate themselves. It includes the String Translation module which allows you to translate widget and other non-post items. The Translation Management module is also very helpful for you to manage translations in-house.
Im developing a wordpress site which i want to make multilanguage with WPML. It got a hardcoded navigation-menu and an embedded flash element on the frontpage which also contains some language which i need to translate.
As far as i understand it, i can translate the navigation-menu items via get_text calls, so this should be fine. But what about the flash element? I would have to make different flash elements (ie menu_en.swf, menu_de.swf, menu_ru.swf) and link them together with my according language selection. Anyway to do this with WPML?
You can use WPML’s language constant and write simple conditional HTML that will load the correct flash file. Alternatively, you can wrap the name of the Flash in gettext and have it translated as well. Both will work fine.
When you purchase, you receive free upgrades and support for one year. During this time, you can download updates as much as you like. After a year, we charge an additional 50% for renewal.
If you don’t renew, everything will continue working normally, but you will not be able to receive more support or download newer versions from us.
I made an automatic upgrade (together with all other plugins). Now I got an error. I tried to replace by the old file, but alle categories are gone and no pages are working. What could I do? Bene
You should use our technical forum to describe the problem there. There are different possible errors. Tell exactly what you got. Also, it’s really not a good idea to use older plugin versions. Better let the support people help you get everything working on the current version.
I reinstalled the old files, but something lets WPML-Plugin thinks, that there is still a need of upgrade. If I try to upgrade, I got this javascript-alert-error:
Now I deleted all WPML, reinstalled the old files, no upgrade button is shown, all articles are there, but now the categories-articles are missing. What could I do?
I ‘ve created a WordPress website in italian and i would like to create an english version of it by translating the content myself (not a lot of content). I ‘m looking to have the menu and all pages/content translated. The site has no posts or comments. Which version is suitable blog or cms?
Thanks in advance for your help.
The Blog version might be OK for you. You can buy it and if you need the other modules, you can upgrade later. Most people end up using the CMS version, but you’re welcome to see if the Blog version is enough for you. Have a look here for what’s included: http://wpml.org/documentation/wpml-core-and-add-on-plugins/
Hello, I am trying to buy WPML. But in paypal, it says this Credit card is not accepted & Google checkout hangs somewhere on Terms & conditions page. Pleas provide us any other way to buy this plugin.
Good day,
I need to know if you can display different logos in the header which would show up depending on which language the visitor selects. English logo for English visitors and a French logo would appear in the header for a visitor selecting the french language. If this is possible I will be purchasing immediately!
Cheers!
You should be able to do this, but it might require a little effort in PHP (5 minutes). The best way would be to wrap the logo file name in a GetText call and then translate it using WPML’s String Translation.
Amir,
Is there any documentation on exactly how to do this? Or are there people in the forums that can do this for me or at the very least direct me how to get this done.
Tks
Bryan
Hi:
I want to have a bilingual wordpress site. The audience groups for different languages are completely different, so the contents under each language are also different. I will use the same theme, but navigation would be different too. Each language has it’s unique content, not just translating.
Can this plugin do that?
Could you provide a sample link so it helps me to make decision?
Thanks
That’s fine. Content in different languages doesn’t have to be related. You can translate existing content, but you can also create independent posts and pages in other languages.
You’ll have different menus for each language. Again, WPML can synchronize between menus in different languages, but this is optional. You can create separate menus for each language.
Hi, the linked blog here is the one I want to have in a multilingual form. My question is, which form of the plugin do I need? The blog or the CMS version? For me very important is, that I get a new widget bar to the right for each language, so I would be able to e.g. put in optins in all available languages. Thank you in advance for your answer!
Greetings,
Alex
I have a theme from studiopress that is based on agentpress which uses taxonomies for the searches, are you supporting translations of these taxonomies?
Hi Amir,
I still have the original ‘free’ version running on my site (Version 2.0.4.1). Even though it’s still functioning okay I would like to (finally!) upgrade the plugin to the latest (paid) version. I’m really happy with the plugin and don’t mind paying a small amount for the real deal 😉 I have however been putting the update off for all this time ’cause I’m afraid I’m going to have to do all my translations all over again. Is it safe to update to the latest version or will I have to start all over again? Perhaps I’ve been postponing it for too long already…

Hi,
I bought prolio theme. It seems that it does not work correctly with your plugin.
Is there any solution?
There are topics on your forum :
http://wpml.org/forums/topic/can-you-tell-me-which-requirements-i-must-take-into-account/
But I must be logged in to see the whole discussion. How should I proceed for login?

Sorry, but there’s no free or trial version of WPML. If you buy WPML and are not satisfied with it, we’ll refund your order. In practice, very few people ask for refunds. WPML and Disqus should work fine together.
Is wpml compatible with the following template?
http://www.templatemonster.com/wordpress-themes/33639.html
Sorry, but I’m not familiar with that theme.
Hi, please, can I translate posts too or only pages? thanks.
WPML lets you translate posts, pages and custom types.
How does wpml works with Widgets?
Our site is fully based on widgets, how are these being translated?
Thank you!
You can translate all widget titles with WPML. Texts widgets translate using WPML’s String Translation. Some other widgets are multilingual by definition and some are not. What kind of widgets are you using?

Mostly html widgets!
Then, there shouldn’t be any problem. You’ll be able to translate them using WPML’s String Translation module.

Not yet. We did contact them but they seem to have other priorities at the moment.

I’m not sure about this theme. You can find some other themes that we know more about here:
http://wpml.org/documentation/theme-compatibility/
Of course, there are many other themes that work great with WPML, but we list themes that we have seen working well ourselves.
You can refer the theme author to our ‘go global’ program:

We will work with them to see that everything works correctly and we’ll do whatever it takes to iron out any problems.

You probably need the CMS package, which includes WPML’s String Translation module. It’s required to translate widgets.
Hello
Am interested in WPML. Is the fee an annual one and does it have to be renewed or is this once I paid, I get the software to use?
Thanks
Payment includes a year of updates and support.
To extend updates and support for another year, we charge an additional 50% per year.
Hello,

Yup. WPML translates custom and standard WordPress taxonomy.

All your content, including translations, should be safe and remain the same. I do suggest that you create a complete DB backup before any update.
