Hi Amir!
I’m planning to buy WPML (CMS) for me and my clients and I have a couple of prebuy questions.
1. How abt WPML and seo? May I alter xml lang-tags etc for the different language versions of the website? A client focusing on the Swedish market has an english wp-install and I’m contemplating re-installing to get the Swedish wp + code settings. Would be nice if WPML solves this instead of reinstall.
2. Your text: “Use WPML on as many sites as you want”. Is that per site-owner or should it be read as buy once and install for many clients? Wd they all be eligible for updates? Your recommendation wd be appreciated.
3. One of my clients is a professional translator and wd like to join WPML:s translator service. Could you send me a good link for that please?
1. Yes, you can manage the SEO tags per language. Since WPML uses different posts for different languages, they will naturally come with their own SEO attributes. We use Yoast SEO plugin on our sites. AIOSEOP also works great with WPML. With WPML, you don’t need to run two WordPress installs to optimize for search engines.
2. You can install WPML on all your client sites. Automatic updates run with your subscription key. You enter it on the client account, but it’s read-only, so your clients cannot transfer it to other sites. Your clients will continue to get automatic updates, as long as your WPML subscription is valid.
My own website have 500 articles in Swedish and I’d love to use wpml to add more languages. For the English version I’d like to handpick some content to translate and have the rest of the existing content invisible. Also I’d like to add some new content that will only exist in English. Preferrably the visitor won’t be able to click into a page that’s not translated. Untranslated pages/menu items should not show up at all and should not show in sitemap.xml. Is this possible in wpml? Otherwise, how does the setup work?
Abt image seo: will alt-tags be availible for translation too, or should I upload doubles for the English version?
WPML works exactly like you describe. It will only display content that is available in each language. Same for menus. You can create a menu for English and a menu for Swedish. If you want, WPML can help you sync between the menus, but you can also manage them separately.
Image alt tags are available for translation. You can reuse the same images for different languages, but display them using different texts in each language. No need to upload duplicates of the images.
Hello,
We are redesigning and rebuilding a web site for our client. They already use WPML on the existing site.
For the rebuild, we need to build the site on a development server. If we purchase the lifetime license, can we move that license from the development server to the live production server when the site is finished?
1) How do I manage the menus translation? is there a built in feature to add translation to each menu tab from the admin?
2) Is there a way to modify the location and appearance of the translation dropdown switching widget on the website? (i.e to have flog icons at the header or footer)
3. I see that the theme author reports Lamoon to be compatible with WPML. We haven’t tested it ourselves, so we don’t know for sure. Since the theme author is interested in having the theme work with WPML, I’m sure that any problem (if any) that you have, we can resolve together.
Greetings from Brazil! What does the account renewal charge cover? It seems like a silly question, but What if I don’t renew the account after one year, will the plugin stop working? Thanks for the attention.
When you buy WPML, you get support and upgrades for a year. You can renew support and upgrades for additional years, at a cost of 50% of the original price, per year.
I was wondering if the plugin will automatically read the ip address and show the appropriate language? If not once someone has visited the site and switched it to for example French Canadian the next time they visit will it remember and show it in the language they have already selected previously? Thanks.
I’m looking at creating a site that has multiple languages, but the blog will only be in English. Is there a way to show the english blog when one of the other languages has been selected by the user?
It would be a 2 step operation:
1. Upgrade to ‘Multilingual CMS’
2. Renew for another year
You might want to consider to upgrade to the CMS Lifetime account. This way, you pay $166 and get the full WPML package for life, without renewal costs next years.
The only problem is that my account is not functional any more.
I am trying to login but my username / password combo does not work.
Also I tried the password recovery option but your system said that there is no account associated with my email.
What steps I have to do?
If I go to purchase the Multilingual website I have to pay again all the amount, without an option to upgrade, thus saving the money I paid when I bought the blog version.
Our admins can help you locate your account and reset your password. Can you please use our contact form to send us your purchase details privately? http://wpml.org/home/contact-us/
I’m planning to build a website with WPML (french + english + spanish) i also plan to buy a plugin called adrotate pro (there’s a free version also) to manage my advertisment campaign.
I asked the developer of adrotate if it would be possible to display a certain group of ad with a specific language only (for example group 1 = french ads, group2 = english ads etc.) so when language is french only ads in french fro mmy french group is displayed etc.
He told me that would possible if wpml had a variable or something like that (im not a specialist) so i’d liek to know if you think that would be possible.
Here’s his answer to me:
“If the translation plugin has a function or hook that sets the language you could use php to determine what to do
Something like;
if($language == ‘fr’) { echo adrotate_group(1); }
Where group 1 has the french ads, etc.
However, $language would be some variable or function the language plugin should provide ofcourse. which I don’t know, but perhaps the plugins documentation or the developer can help you with.”
we are currently developing a brand new Theme for WP and would like to enable our clients to use this plugin. I couldn’t find the right answers in the forum, so if you could please answer the following questions.
1/ Is it possible to bundle your WPML Plugin within a Theme (sold separately on marketplaces) or is it possible to autoinstall it during the Theme installation?
2/ If we use WPML to do one-time translation of our Theme or plugins, is it necessary to have the plugin installed in WP or can the translated plugins be distributed indepently from WPML?
3/ If above is valid, is this license sufficient?
Multilingual CMS / Lifetime
1. You shouldn’t bundle WPML with a theme. Instead, you can verify compatibility and link to wpml.org. You can use an affiliate link for this, so that when people buy WPML to run your theme multilingual, you get paid. The best thing for clients is to ensure full compatibility with the theme. Have a look here for guidelines for theme authors: http://wpml.org/documentation/support/achieving-wpml-compatibility-for-your-themes-and-plugins/
This isn’t directly related to WPML. It will allow your site to run with any language other than English. This is important to do for any theme, with and without WPML. In addition, WPML will correctly set the language code and cause the right translations to load in multilingual sites.
3. We would be happy to issue you a complementary WPML account for theme authors. Please keep in mind the above guidelines. If you need help, our support people will be glad to assist. The contact page for theme authors is here: http://wpml.org/documentation/theme-compatibility/go-global-program/

You will get the same sidebars, but the content can be translated. WPML lets you translate all widget titles and it will also display the content of WordPress widgets in the right language.
If you have PNG images for ads, you should be able to display different images for different languages. This depends on the code in the widget.
Can I buy the Multilingual CMS version first to try a year and switch to the life long package next year by paying the price difference if all good? Thank you

Would you like to refer the theme author to our ‘Go Global’ program? http://wpml.org/documentation/theme-compatibility/go-global-program/
If you want to add another language to your site (including Arabic), WPML should be the right solution for you. Some themes have RTL (right to left) support and some don’t. I suggest to also check with your theme and make sure that it will display correctly in RTL languages.

My client has an academic-driven website and have contributors who will be sending in articles of various sizes.
My question is, do I have too MANUALLY translate some things or it can be done AUTOMATICALLY?
I really would not have time to translate or employ someone to do large translations on regular basis.
WPML doesn’t include automated content translation. It’s a tool that lets you run a multilingual WordPress site, but WPML doesn’t do the translation for you. WPML does include interfaces for convenient translation. Have a look here for different translation methods with WPML: http://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/
About the license: is the license in my name? Am I the owner or my client?
And let’s say the client has access to FTP. Can he distribute the plugin with my license? I mean how is it possible to control unrightous/illegal usability of the plugin after I install the full pack under my client website where he only would have access to a part of the plugin?
Best regards.
Thank you once again.
H.
I had asked a question here earlier today but for some reason it wasn’t published.
Second attempt:
1. How does WPML function with feeds? If I were to publish a post in English and then translate it into Dutch, would that Dutch post be seen as a new post and thus sent out by my feed, or not?
2. Let’s say I have a twitter account for both the Dutch and the English version of my blog. Would it be possible to promote a post with distinct urls for my Dutch and English speaking twitter followers? So that the English post is tweeted on the English twitter account and the Dutch post on the Dutch Twitter account (same for other social media)
3. Is it possible to only upload images once for a post in two languages, but somehow translate the alt text and description for that image so that also alt tag and description (and title?) exist in two languages?
I know these are technical questions but as I’m not a customer yet, I can’t publish in the support forum.
2. Certainly. Each post will have its own separate URL, which you can include in Twitter. You can post to Twitter manually, or use a feed-to-Twitter tool and use the feeds per language for that.
3. Yes. You can use the same image files, in posts in different languages, and give the images separate texts (alt, description, caption), per language. For that, you will use the WPML Media Translation extension, which is included when you buy WPML. http://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/media-translation/
1. I am now translating all my posts from English to Dutch and once that’s done, I’ll probably purchase WPML and enter all the translations at once, but as at that time no one will be subscribed to my Dutch feed, that wouldn’t be a problem, right?
And having a separate feed also means that I can offer Dutch speaking people a separate feed subscribe option, right?
2. So if I get it correct, if my English site would have a post with url mydomain.com/category/post, the Dutch translation of that post would have an url mydomain.com/category/post_nl. Something like that?
3. Sounds great!
4. One extra thing: how about dating the posts? If I translate a post now and the original post was published in 2012, will the translated post also get the 2012 date?
Thank you for taking the time to help me out. I just want to make sure that I know what my options are and what I need to take into account before I start.
1. I don’t see a problem in translating everything and then feeding to WordPress. Your Dutch feed will get content once you enter the Dutch translations.
2. The Dutch content will be arranged under a virtual folder ‘nl’, like: example.com/nl/category_in_Dutch/post_in_Dutch/ . You can localize both categories and post slugs.
4. WPML can auto-synchronize post publishing dates. This is an optional feature, which you can enable or disable. In some cases, it makes sense to synchronize dates of translations. In other cases, it’s better to leave the dates, according to when content was translated.
Not deleted, only held for moderation. Need any more help? I’m sorry for your questions appearing deleted, they were fine and I was slow to reply today.
Sorry Amir, usually sites have a line saying *your comment will be published after moderation” or something like that. I didn’t get a message like that and I could see my comment for a few minutes until it disappeared.
That’s why I assumed it was deleted.

You can use WPML on your own and your client sites. Any account that you buy for WPML lets you install WPML on your different sites.

3) Will the plugin work with this theme:

Thank you

1. Yes, WPML includes a built-in function for translating WordPress menus. You can create completely different menus, per language, or let WPML synchronize them for you. Have a look here:
http://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/translating-menus/
2. WPML lets you display a language switcher in any widget zone, in the site’s footer or as a menu item. You can also create your completely custom language switcher and add them anywhere in the theme, with a single PHP call.
http://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/language-setup/custom-language-switcher/
3. I see that the theme author reports Lamoon to be compatible with WPML. We haven’t tested it ourselves, so we don’t know for sure. Since the theme author is interested in having the theme work with WPML, I’m sure that any problem (if any) that you have, we can resolve together.

You can upgrade from Blog to CMS Lifetime. When you do that, we ask for the difference between the prices, which is $166.
I was wondering if the plugin will automatically read the ip address and show the appropriate language? If not once someone has visited the site and switched it to for example French Canadian the next time they visit will it remember and show it in the language they have already selected previously? Thanks.
WPML does this based on the browser’s language setting. This is usually more accurate than the IP address because people in different countries may prefer to read content in different languages. You can read how this works here:
http://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/language-setup/automatic-redirect-based-on-browser-language/
I’m looking at creating a site that has multiple languages, but the blog will only be in English. Is there a way to show the english blog when one of the other languages has been selected by the user?
Yes. WPML has an option to show the blog posts in the default language, for content in all other languages.

Good new 🙂 WPML sets a constant with the current language. The constant is ICL_LANGUAGE_CODE. Have a look here:

I think that this is exactly what you’re looking for. If the author of the ads plugin needs help, we’ll be glad to work with him.

Hi!
If I buy a Multilingual Liftetime licence, am I allowed to use this lisens on my client web projects without buying extra licences for each client?

I had asked a question here earlier today but for some reason it wasn’t published.

Sorry for being slow to respond.
1. You will get feeds per language. Look at the feeds in our site:
https://wpml.org/es/rss/
The Dutch feed would include the Dutch posts.

Does this help?

Just a few more questions:
1. I am now translating all my posts from English to Dutch and once that’s done, I’ll probably purchase WPML and enter all the translations at once, but as at that time no one will be subscribed to my Dutch feed, that wouldn’t be a problem, right?

Why do my questions keep getting deleted??????
Not deleted, only held for moderation. Need any more help? I’m sorry for your questions appearing deleted, they were fine and I was slow to reply today.
Sorry Amir, usually sites have a line saying *your comment will be published after moderation” or something like that. I didn’t get a message like that and I could see my comment for a few minutes until it disappeared.
That’s why I assumed it was deleted.
