This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
You are unable to connect English and French pages as translations on your website despite following the steps in the online documentation.
Solution:
1. Open the default language page in Edit mode. If you see a gear icon instead of a plus (+) icon, it indicates a stuck translation. Remove the stuck translated page.
2. Edit the secondary language page in Edit mode.
3. Click on the "Connect with translation" link.
4. Search for the English page title (e.g., "2026") and select the correct page.
This should correctly link your pages as translations. Please check and confirm if the issue is resolved.

If this solution does not apply to your case, or if it seems outdated, we recommend opening a new support ticket. Hi,

Thank you for contacting WPML Support. Could you please follow the below steps and see if this resolves the issue:

1. Take a backup of your site first for safety reasons.

2. We have recently released WPML 4.8.2, please update it to the latest version. You can update it from Plugins >> Add New Plugin page, click the Commercial tab, and then click the “Check for updates” button.

Here is the screenshot for more details: https://wpml.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/wpml-force-plugin-update-1.png

3. Please make sure those two pages are not linked with any other page, they both should show the Plus(+) icon with another language flag as you can see in the attached screenshots.

4. Please make sure you have followed the step-by-step instructions from this doc: https://wpml.org/faq/how-to-link-already-translated-pages/

If the issue persists, please provide temporary access (WP-Admin and FTP Login info) to your site (preferably staging site), so that I can look into your setup and debug the issue.

Your next answer will be private, meaning only you and I can access it.

=== Please backup your database and website ===

✙ I would need your permission to deactivate and reactivate Plugins and the Theme and to change configurations on the site. This is also a reason the backup is essential.

✙ Please share the both pages link that you want to link with each other.

Thank you

Sorry, I missed the fact that you had replied because there was no notification about that sent to me, only a message that you were still reviewing the ticket.

The plugin was already upgraded.

It's still a problem -- the dialogue box that appears to select the page to connect to doesn't work.

That was awkward! You promised that the next reply I made would be private so I added the login and FTP details as requested, but it ended up wide open on the internet.

How do I send you those details and not to the entire world?!

Thanks for letting me know. Please don’t share any login details publicly. I’ve now enabled the private reply option on your ticket, so you can safely resend the access details, they’ll only be visible to you and me.

Thanks for providing the login details. I followed the below steps:

1.Opened the default language page in Edit mode, it showed a gear icon instead of a plus (+) icon, indicating a stuck translation. I removed the stuck translated page.

2. Edited the secondary language page in Edit mode.

3. Clicked on the “Connect with translation” link.

4. Searched for the English page title (e.g., “2026”) and selected the correct page.

Now it linked correctly. Could you please check and confirm?

Thank you for your cooperation and patience

Thank you for your help.

It would be helpful if you could outline the step "removed a stuck translation" because I followed the steps given to do that and it hadn't worked.
