Background of the issue:
I was trying to edit the header template after successfully translating the menu from German to English. The issue occurred when I attempted to save my edits to the header template, specifically concerning the language switcher on the right side. The problem started after I translated the header menu. Symptoms:
I received an error message when saving my edits: 'Die Aktualisierung ist fehlgeschlagen. Die Antwort ist keine gültige JSON-Antwort.' (The update has failed. The response is not a valid JSON response.)
Questions:
How can I unblock the header template editing?
Why am I receiving a 'not a valid JSON response' error when saving edits?
This is usually caused by a conflict with another plugin. Could you please perform a full backup and then deactivate all 3rd party plugins except the WPML and theme required plugins. Then, recheck and see if it works.

I also have a ticket open with another supporter (https://wpml.org/forums/topic/set-up-wpml-on-a-fse-site/) and there I did a short screencast documenting my problem (in German however, as the supporter speaks German). This is just FYI, it makes no sense to have 2 tickets open dealing with the same problem, so I stick with the other tread. My reply here is just not to let your kind reply go uncommented. 🙂
