This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client was unable to start automatic translation on their site using WPML because of an error message stating that the default language, German, must be assigned to a supported language.
Solution:
The client resolved the issue by going to the settings and activating the new editor, including old translations. After saving these changes, the error message disappeared, and the client was able to proceed with automatic translations.

Background of the issue:
I want to start automatic translation on my site hidden link using WPML. However, I am encountering an issue with the language settings.

Symptoms:
I get the following error message: 'Ihre Standardsprache, Deutsch, muss einer unterstützten Sprache zugeordnet werden, um die automatische Übersetzung zu nutzen' (Your default language, German, must be assigned to a supported language in order to use automatic translation).

Questions:
Why am I receiving an error message about my default language not being assigned to a supported language?
How can I resolve the issue to start using automatic translation with WPML?

I could solve the issue myself, however the bug consists in an completely inconsistent error message.

My fix was to go to settings and activate the new editor INCLUDING eventually old translations. After I saved that the error message mentioned above dissapeared and I could go on doing automatic translations. -> Please review the system's error message which is confusing!
