EDIT: I do have the basic WPML without string translation. I tried to change the language at the top of the wordpress menu and have one translation in the German flag and the other one in the English one. Still not helping.

Thank you for contacting WPML support, I'd be happy to help you with this issue.

You have the Multilingual Blog license which doesn't support the plugin WPML String Translation. I recommend upgrading the license to Multilingual CMS to use WPML String Translation and translate widget content, theme strings on your site.
