Background of the issue:
I am trying to manage a group in another language using BuddyBoss, but I encountered an issue with language settings.

Symptoms:
When I save the group in the second language, it saves the data as if it were in the first language.

Questions:
Why does saving a group in the second language result in it being saved as the first language?
How can I ensure that the group management saves data correctly in the intended language?

Hi,
Thanks, can you please check, whether this is still needed because of the latest update of the Buddyboss glue plugin?
Thanks, kind regards
Eric

Hello Eric,

Making Groups translatable was included in BuddyPress Multilingual 1.8.0.

You will need the WPML String Translation plugin to translate them. Is this plugin currently active on the site?

It would also be very helpful if you could provide us with WPML debugging information.
More information here:
https://wpml.org/de/faq/provide-debug-information-faster-support/

I will try to recreate this issue on a new sandbox and then get back to you.

Best regards
Andreas

The issue here is that the "Group Types" taxonomy of Buddy Boss is not translatable in the same terms as when it comes to posts or pages.

The group will, by default, become available in the second language, even without actually translating it.

In fact, the group only exists once, not once per language, and this is why you are running into the reported issues.

Example:
We create a post and translate it with the WPML Translation Editor or WordPress Editor. This will create two entries on the WP Posts table, one entry for each post. Then WPML's table creates the language connections for those posts. Now we are able to edit the texts for each post by using the WPML Translation Editor or the WordPress Editor.

When creating BuddyBoss Groups, this is not the case, as we never translate the group itself. The group remains to exist only once in the database, and we use WPML String Translation to simply display different texts for each language.

I remember you reported this same issue in the past, and I remember trying to find a workaround by creating a custom snippet for this issue. I do not recall if it worked out, but I will take a look through our old ticket and see if I can still find something about it.

If I can not find a solution, I will consult the compatilbity team about this issue and keep you updated here on this ticket.

Hi Andreas,

thank you for the comprehensive response.

After some time, I’ve had the chance to test the BuddyBoss groups feature again, and I’m happy to report that many things are working much better now. All my earlier BuddyBoss-related tickets are resolved (finally, after months), and features like group search in secondary languages and the translation of group types are functioning correctly. These improvements – resulting from recent BuddyBoss updates and your BuddyBoss Glue plugin – are definitely appreciated.

However, I’ve encountered one remaining issue:

If a group owner or moderator edits a group that was originally created in the primary language, but performs the edit in a secondary language, the system still overwrites the original group name in the primary language. This seems to break the expected multilingual behavior.

Here’s a second test case that clearly demonstrates the issue:

A user creates a new group in German (which is our secondary language) and assigns a German group name. Upon saving, that German name is automatically saved as the name in the primary language, and translations into the other languages are generated based on that. The result is:

EN = German group name
DE = German group name
Other languages = translated version of the German name
This shows that regardless of which language is active when editing, the system always saves the group name into the first language, which can lead to inconsistencies.

Would you be able to verify this behavior on your end as well? If needed, I can reproduce it on a WPML sandbox site for demonstration.

Thanks again and best regards,
Eric

Yes, as I tried to explain earlier, the Group is not really multilingual.

It keeps existing only in the site's default language. Our compatibility team did not find a way to make the Groups actually available in other languages.

We currently display the same group in all languages and simply translate the strings with WPML > String Translation.

I will consult one of our compatilbity developers about this and then get back to you.

We have published the following errata:
https://wpml.org/errata/buddyboss-issue-editing-group-title-and-description-from-profile-page-in-secondary-language/

At the moment we can saldy not provide a better workaround, so we will need for the development team to see which options that might have to solve the issue.
