This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
You are using WPML on your WordPress website and want the default language to include a language parameter in the URL, such as accessing the Dutch version at example.com/nl/ instead of just example.com/. However, you couldn't find an option in WPML settings to enforce the inclusion of the language slug for the default language.
Solution:
To include the language slug for the default language, you need to activate the "Use directory for default language" checkbox. You can find this option by following the guide provided in the WPML Directory for Default Language documentation. Remember, this option requires a root page, as explained in the guide.

Background of the issue:
I am using WPML on my WordPress website hidden link. I want to ensure that the default language also includes a language parameter in the URL. For example, I want the Dutch version to be accessible at example.com/nl/ instead of just example.com/.

Symptoms:
I couldn't find an option in the WPML settings to enforce the inclusion of the language slug for the default language.

Questions:
Is there a way to configure WPML to include the language slug for the default language?
Is there a recommended workaround to achieve this without causing issues with existing content?

Hi,

To enable this, you need to activate the "Use directory for default language" checkbox, as shown in the first screenshot here: WPML Directory for Default Language.

Keep in mind that this option requires a root page, as explained in the next step of the guide.

Best regards,
Marcel
