This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
You are experiencing a Gateway Timeout error when trying to use the Menu Sync feature in WPML. This issue occurs despite the site functioning normally in other aspects, and the PHP timeout is set to 5 minutes, but the gateway timeout happens in 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
Solution:
We recommend checking with your hosting provider to ensure that the server resources are not being exceeded. Additionally, you can debug performance issues by following the steps outlined in the WPML documentation on how to debug performance problems.

If this solution does not resolve your issue or seems irrelevant due to being outdated or not applicable to your case, we highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If you still need assistance, please open a new support ticket at WPML support forum.

Thanks for contacting us. A gateway timeout error is usually related to the server's limited resources. I'd suggest checking with your hosting provider about this.

Also, you can try debugging the performance issues using the method here https://wpml.org/faq/how-to-debug-performance-problems/ .

Let me know how it goes.

My site is fine, no issues reported, the only issues is using menu sync. It normally takes a few minutes to come up, the php timeout is 5 minutes, the gateway timeout occurs in 2minutes 30 seconds. I have 12 additional languages besides English.

The debugbar didn't help show anything at all.

Thanks for your reply.

I will need to closely examine your website. Therefore, I will require temporary access (WP-Admin and FTP) to a test site where the problem has been replicated, if possible. This will enable me to provide better assistance and determine if any configurations need to be modified.

Please note that it is important to have a backup for security purposes and to prevent any potential data loss. You can use the UpdraftPlus plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/) to fulfill your backup requirements.

Your upcoming reply will be treated with confidentiality and will only be visible to you and me.

✙ To resolve the issue, I may need your consent to deactivate and reactivate plugins and the theme, as well as make configuration changes on the site if necessary. This emphasizes the significance of having a backup.

So I created the test site by backup/import, however the test site wpml menu sync shows up where as on the production site backed up, gives the subject error. What would that suggest?

Thanks for your reply. Could you please share access to your production/staging site so that I can check what's going on?

I used All-In-One Wp Migrate to backup/restore then it started working. I tried that because doing backup/import to WIP site worked.
