Background of the issue:
I am trying to translate Patterns (formerly Reusable Blocks) in WordPress using WPML. I noticed that translations occasionally disappear without explanation. For example, the English translation of my Thailand pattern disappeared, leaving only the Dutch version visible on my English site. This issue can be seen on the page: hidden link.

Symptoms:
Translations of Patterns disappear without explanation. When attempting to recreate the translation, I initially get 'not allowed' error messages and eventually reach a page to create a new pattern rather than a translation via the WPML editor. The original English translation cannot be found.

Questions:
Why are translations disappearing?
How can I properly translate Patterns using WPML?
How can I recover lost translations?

Hi,

The issue seems to be fixed. I created a video explaining the details:

Hi Christopher,

Sorry for the late reply, I only received the reminder e-mail and not your original reply.

What I still don't understand is where my former translations went.
In December, I discovered that my pattern translations for Belize, Bulgaria, Malta, Scotland, and Peru had disappeared. So I redid them, for Belize and Peru I even created an extra version only in English because of the WPML issue. However, Bulgaria and Malta are gone again, and now I'm also missing Thailand, Italy, and Denmark.

How do I know that they won't disappear again?

Thanks,
Kim

Hi Kim,

We can keep monitoring that to be able to find why this is happening.

Please keep one as a sample that you monitor and it works ok now and if you go to the translation editor you can see the translation there.

Paste the Advanced Translation Editor link here for that so we will have access to the translation job.

If the issue happens again come back to use and we will be able to check what happened to that translation job.

Thanks.

Hi Christopher,

Ok, so redo all the translations and check them several times in the upcoming weeks to see if they stick now, correct?

Thanks.

Hi,

Yes that is correct, also please make sure you periodically have a backup of the website.

That way if the issue happens you will have a point to restore. But this time you will have the steps to check.

But please share the Advanced translation editor link for a sample block that can be tracked by us.

Thanks.

Hi Christopher,

Having a backup is not of much use as that will put all the work done on the site back to an older status too. Since there are no alerts when a reusable block disappears, I will often only notice it by accident after weeks. I can't publish backups and have all my other work undone.

Anyway, here's a link: hidden link

I've only updated one to start with.

Also, I'm not sure if it's related, but since it also has to do with disappearing translations...

I'm also experiencing issues with translating FAQ blocks. I can translate it in the editor, but once the translation is finished, I get an error message in the article itself. When I click 'attempt recovery', my translation is lost, and I need to reenter it manually.

Thank you for the URL, I wanted to check that but unfortunately the previous login information you shared with me int he chat does not work anymore.

I'd appreciate it if you could give me the URL/User/Pass of your WordPress dashboard after you make sure that you have a backup of your website.
It is absolutely important that you give us a guarantee that you have a backup so if something happens you will have a point of restore.

Make sure you set the next reply as private.

Also, the FAQ points seems to be something different that I think warrants a new ticket if it is possible for you to open one.

Thanks

Great thank you for the link for Thailand item.

Just to make sure we are on the same page, you translated it manually by changing the language at the top admin bar and using WordPress editor.

You did not use the advanced translation editor correct?

For now I see the translation present.

I explained why I asked the previous question in the video below:

Hi Christopher,

In your previous video, you explained that if by clicking on the 'add translation' button in the reusable blocks section, the Advanced Translator wouldn't show, I had to send it for translation via the WPML section. For Thailand, it opened directly in the Advanced Translator. So there was no need to do that.

It seems to depend on which item you try to translate whether I have to send it to translation first.

So for example, I am now working on Belize. Clicking the 'add translation' button here, doesn't bring me to the Advanced Translator. So I added it to the translation basket via the way you described.

Then, I can click on the 'add translation' button in the reusable blocks section. But what you might notice in the screenshot, is that most of it is already filled and some fields are missing. Which proves that I had already translated this block before and that it magically disappeared for no reason.

Just for you to see what a nightmare it is and why it takes me so long to work on these blocks: hidden link
