Ok, so to recap, you

- deleted the duplicated entries (for which Glossary entry?)
- sent a page to translation (which one?)
- there was no difference
- after retrieving the translation, all glossary entries had duplicates

Correct?

Regarding our staging site:

Yes, we deleted the duplicate entries of "Jungfrau Region".

Sorry, we looked into the ATE directly. Now, we did it via sending a page to translation (ourselves in this case). The German strings are no longer empty if the English strings contains "Jungfrau Region". But, this now applies too when we now open the ATE directly. Yesterday, we had empty strings in these cases.

So, we now do see translation and they are marked as changed so we have to confirm them again. One point to note is that these translations are old versions. Edits we made later are gone. But that might be because we're on the staging site which is an older copy.

My translator also says this: "I'm not sure if all pages/posts that contain non-confirmed translations can be filtered by their WPML status. Last time I checked, some showed the status "translation is completed" (indicated by the pencil icon) even though there still were translated strings to be confirmed. I can't find examples now, so maybe that problem is fixed too. If it isn't, and if I can't be sure that filtering by the status "translation needs updating" (indicated by the cogwheel icon) is enough, I'll have to manually open the ATE and check for pretty much each page/post on our website, to make sure that all strings are confirmed and the updated translations are published."

Regarding the live site:
"after retrieving the translation, all glossary entries had duplicates": no, this only applies to the live site and we did not send anything to translation there. The duplicates seem to be generated spontaneously. We did not delete these duplicats yet because I first need to be sure how to fix the problem.

Once the duplicated gossary entries are deleted (all of them) you should send your content to automatic translation and it should be fixed.

Since the entries are a lot, I asked if it's possible to clean up automatically on our side, I'll let you know as soon as possible.

We deleted all duplicated entries on staging and production, you can send everything to translation now and it should work fine.

Hi Laura,

Thank you. My colleague went through all the posts manually, because we only use auto-translation as a starting point but it can't go online unsupervised. So, a lot of work. As far as we can see the only posts affected are the ones containing the glossary term we initially edited.

The main question for now: is this all solved on your end, and is there no more risk it will happen again? Is it safe to edit, add, and delete glossary terms?

What will happen after an edit or delete? Will all posts with that term be marked as "changed"? Will it throw away our translations containing the glossary term?

After all this work, we're a bit nervous to touch the glossary again.

For next time, may I ask you to contact me before making any changes to a site other than a staging site? We have backups, but on sites with multiple people working on them it's often not viable to actually restore one, should something go wrong.

No author can guarantee an issue won't happen for sure, so we can't either. Also because this was related to DeepL so we share responsibility here.
So, it shouldn't happen again but we can't tell you "we are 100% sure"

For now, if you change a glossary term you'll need to retranslate the pages using it - in the future this should change though.

The glossary cleanup was done from our translation servers, so it couldn't affect your sites.
