This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:

I'm attempting to manually translate my site's homepage into French via the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE). Despite completing the translation, the page is stuck on 'Refreshing translation status' with a continuously rotating arrow symbol.

I went to WPML → Support → Advanced Translation Editor → Error logs and here is the error:

The uploaded xliff file does not seem to be properly formatted.

Solution:

Check if there is a conflict with a third-party plugin or theme. If not, consider the possibility of special characters or unsupported Elementor Elements causing issues.

In this case, the issue was due to the '>' and '<' symbols on the page. Removing these symbols resolved the problem.

I am trying to manually translate my site's home page into French but after completing the translation in ATE, the page is stuck with a rotating arrow symbol. This issue only seems to occur on this one page of the site, but recreating and translating it doesn't change anything. Any help is much appreciated!

Hi there,

Thank you for contacting WPML support. While you are waiting for one of my colleagues to take this ticket and work on it, let me provide you with the first debugging steps or if I can help with the issue quickly.

Could you please confirm if the translation status in ATE is 100% completed?

If it's 100% completed, please go to WPML → Support → Advanced Translation Editor → Error logs and share a screenshot of that page.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Hi, yes the translation status in ATE is 100% completed. I've attached a screenshot of the error log, there are more further down the page but they all seem to be the same error.

Thanks for your help.

Hi there,

Thank you for the screenshot. The error indicates that either a special character or an unsupported Elementor Element causing the formation of the initial XLIFF file, which is a way for WPML to send the content to the Advanced Translation Editor.

Would you please check if there is a third party plugin or theme conflict going on?

- IMPORTANT STEP! Create a backup of your website. Or better approach will be to test this on a copy/staging version of the website to avoid any disruption of a live website.
- Switch to the default theme such as "TwentyTwenty" by going to "WordPress Dashboard > Appearance > themes".
- Go to "WordPress Dashboard > Plugins" and deactivate all plugins except WPML and its add-ons.
- Check if you can still recreate the issue.
- If not, re-activate your plugins one by one and check the issue each time to find out the plugin that causes the problem.

If the issue is not that, please use the YOAST Duplicate plugin to copy the homepage:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicate-post/

In the copied page start by removing Rows in Elementor and test to see if the translation works. That way you will be able to pinpoint which row has the issue and check that.

Thanks.

Hi, I followed the troubleshooting advice and discovered it was the '>' and '<' symbols on the page causing the issues. I have now removed these which solved the problem. Thank you very much!
