This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem:
The client needed to join some segments in the Advanced Translation Editor but couldn't find the button with the chain icon.
Solution:
We explained that the Advanced Translation Editor breaks content into sentences to keep track of all translated text in the translation memory across the site. However, elements from blocking elements cannot be joined, which is why these strings cannot be joined. We provided a video for reference: https://youtu.be/-Nlt2rIRF8A?t=27 and also directed the client to our guide on "Joining text segments": https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/advanced-translation-editor/#joining-sentences.
