I installed WPML on my site with almost 10,000 posts and over 30,000 images. The plugin seemed to automatically duplicate all the images in five languages, which doubled the size of the database to 1.3 GB, which is over the limit for my hosting.

I specifically changed the Settings to NOT have the images duplicated, but it still did so. Is there a way to use this plugin WITHOUT duplicating all the images in the database.

And yes, I tried changing the settings in Media Translation, but all the "Duplicate existing media" are automatically checked. And even when you UNCHECK them and then save, it will duplicates all the images in the database. Is there a way around this?

Hello,

thanks for contacting us.

I am afraid that is not possible, WPML creates a DB entry of image data for 2nd language. It can be translated or not, but it needs to exist so the image can be shown in 2nd language.

If it doesn't exist, then no 2nd language image information exists, and no image will be showing in the proper place for the 2nd language.

I am sorry for your troubles, hope my reply helps understand.

So just to confirm, there's no way to use WPML at all without it duplicating (in the database) every one of the 22,000 images we have on our server. Is that correct?

Hello,

there is a way you can disable these settings from the media settings page and from each page Media settings from the right sidebar, and delete the DB entries / 2nd language images, but that will probably cause missing images / to not show on 2nd language frontend pages.

Hope this makes it clear.
