[Resolved] keeping default languages of WP dashbooard and of the site different
This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: The client is trying to keep the WordPress Dashboard in English while having Russian as the default site language. However, the Dashboard language keeps reverting to Russian automatically after attempting to change it in the user profile settings. Solution: We recommend checking if the "Set admin language as editing language" option is enabled in your WPML settings. If it is, you should disable this option to prevent the Dashboard language from changing when you switch languages in the admin area. After disabling this option, set your desired language in your user profile and verify if the issue is resolved.
Please note that this solution might be irrelevant if it's outdated or not applicable to your case. If the problem persists, we highly recommend checking related known issues, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If you still need assistance, please open a new support ticket.
This is the technical support forum for WPML - the multilingual WordPress plugin.
Everyone can read, but only WPML clients can post here. WPML team is replying on the forum 6 days per week, 22 hours per day.
Tell us what you are trying to do? Can you provide more insights on how I can keep the WordPress Dashboard in English while retaining Russian as the default site language.😊
In my WP dashboard in User profile I was trying to change the language from Russian into English (as it is easier to edit the site in English and also to provide feedback to tech support and ask for help), but it keeps changing back to Russian automatically.
In Divi support helped me to disable transaltions but it worked only for Divi theme ironically. see the screenshot of my dashaboard.
Changing the language in your profile should be in the correct place. Check if you also turned off the option "Set admin language as editing language" in the profile settings.
If the issue persists, I recommend checking this by disabling all plugins except WPML. Also, check if you do not have a constant with language locale defined in your wp-config.php file, which is located in the root of your WP installation.
I am still at a loss. I studied the materials you sent. I enabled all unnecessary plugins - see the screenshot.
I go to user profile and change the admin language (I already did it yesterday) but with the same result! It switches back to Russian (as I set it in WPML settings as the default language of the site). - automatically changes as soon as I update the information. I was trying to record my screen, but recordit seems to stumble on this MacBook.
I wanted to set the default language as Estonian, as it will be in the future, but my current version is in Russian, I have not made an Estonian copy yet.. Or could I have made it as the default language without having its copies?
I do not know what prevents the admin language from being different from the default language of the site.
PS2: That is what tech support from Divi builder wrote regarding the issue: In that case, you will have to reach out to WPML support to let them know about the issue. I'm afraid, Divi doesn't control the translation of WordPress Dashboard. This will be controlled by WPML plugin.👍
The language of your admin profile and the default site language are separate and independent of each other.
Could you please check how it works if you temporarily change your current theme to any default theme?
I need to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site – preferably to a test site where the problem has been replicated if possible – in order to be of better help. You will find the needed fields for this below the comment area when you log in to leave your next reply. The information you will enter is private which means only you and I can see and have access to it.
Also I can not change the theme, as I am using only Divi theme.
I wrote: I disabled translations in my User Profile, but the language changed only for Divi theme, for WordPress it remained the default language of the site, which is not convenient at all.
YOu see I am not a programmer to be able to replicate the issue , and i do not have much time to copy paste the site I am doing with Divi builder into the site you made.
I finally made the video of the screen of how the language of WP dashboard automatically changes into Russian back again (it is set as the default language of the website). It has not happened before on other sites I made using the same Divi, the same WPML (or may be not the same?). There these 2 languages are different: for admin purposes and for the website.
I uploaded the video I made through screenpal on my computer, and there is no way here unfortunately to attach it to the message. Can you provide this opportunity?
Thank you for your message. You don't have to be a programmer to try to replicate the issue. I will activate a private message for you so you can share the link to the screencast.
If the only option is to replicate the issue on the site you made, you can send it to me. Only it will take me some days to copy some parts of the site, as i am very busy now. Last time the message was closed after one day.
It is really very inconvenient to work in Russian as admin, as you speak Russian, you may understand how confusing it is. For instance, The Russian variant for "position" (of elements) is "должность", "relative" (position) is "родственник".. Or I have even 2 similar translations of 2 different items in the divi module settings: Width and Maximum width, and both are translated as "максимальная ширина"....
Strange, that this issue appeared only now...
I am using Divi Builder for constructing sites of it is called "elegant themes"
If this option is enabled, changing the language using the language switcher in the admin will also change the admin's language. You must turn off this option so that the admin language sticks to what you chose in your profile and test it again. Kindly check if you can turn off this option and let me know if the issue persists.
The last consultant (i can not see your name) - thank you! I was sure that keeping admin language as editing language should be done...
Now everything is fine.
