This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client has multiple sites installed in different subdirectories on the same domain and wants to know if they can register each site separately in WPML, especially since the sites for Mexico and the United States have different content, users, and plugins from the main site in Spain.

Solution:
We assured the client that having separate installations in subdirectories is not an issue for WPML, as 'us' and 'mx' are not official language codes. We recommended that the client:
1. Make a full backup of their websites.
2. Test the WPML setup to ensure it behaves as expected.
3. Register both websites separately on the WPML account sites page, which can be found here: https://wpml.org/account/sites/.

Please note that this solution might be irrelevant if it's outdated or not applicable to your case. If you encounter issues or if the solution does not work for you, we highly recommend checking the related known issues, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. Hello,

I am reaching out to see if anyone has experience with the situation we find ourselves in. We now have several sites on the same domain name, but they are installed in different subdirectories.

We started with a site at nuba.com which is in two languages: Spanish and English. Spanish is the default language, and English is available at nuba.com/en/. This site is already registered on WPML .

Nuba also operates in Mexico and the United States, but their services in those countries are completely different from those in Spain, with different users, admins, and plugins etc. The decision was made to install separate WordPress sites in subdirectories for Mexico and the United States. We have cloned the nuba.com site into these subdirectories and they are located at nuba.com/mx/ and nuba.com/us/, respectively. In both sites, in the dashboard we were asked by WPML, “Do you still have the same site running at nuba.com?” We have selected “Yes. This is only a copy - original site is still running.”

The Mexico site will be in two languages, Spanish and English, with Spanish as the default language. The site at nuba.com/us/ only requires English. To keep things simple and to avoid any possible conflicts with the advanced translation editor, my plan is to register nuba.com/mx/ as a separate website in WPML. This way, in WPML, we would see two registered sites: one for nuba.com and one for nuba.com/mx/. Is that possible?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Michael

Hello,

Thank you for sharing the details. It shouldn't be a problem, since us and mx are not official language codes used by WPML. I recommend you make a full backup of your websites and test it, to see if it behaves as expected after setting up WPML.

This way, in WPML, we would see two registered sites: one for nuba.com and one for nuba.com/mx/. Is that possible?

Yes, you can register both websites here:

I hope that gives you some insight!
