This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client is developing a theme using the new WordPress block editor and wants to translate a "navigation block" menu. The client's current WPML installation does not include "Translation Management", which is necessary for translating block-based themes, and the client is unsure if an upgrade is required.

Solution:
If you're using a block-based theme and need to translate a Navigation Menu block, you must do so from the "WPML > Translation Management" section. To understand the process, we recommend checking out this guide: Translating Menus in Site Editor Templates.

Ensure you have the latest version of WPML (V: 4.6.9) and String Translation (V: 3.2.9) installed. You can download the latest versions from your WPML.ORG account at https://wpml.org/account/downloads/. After updating, you should be able to translate the Navigation menu block by following the provided guide.

Please note that the solution provided might be outdated or not applicable to your case. If this is the case, we highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If you still encounter issues, please do not hesitate to open a new support ticket. For further assistance, you can reach out to us on the WPML support forum.

Tell us what you are trying to do?

I am developing a theme with the new WordPress block editor (it is a child of the Twenty Twenty-Three theme). I want to create a WPML translation for a "navigation block" - a menu. Under the old WordPress editor, it was possible to link menus between languages. I cannot see any way to do this with a navigation block in my version of WPML.

Is there any documentation that you are following?

All WPML documentation refers either to the old WordPress editor, or to a WPML installation with "Translation management", which is not available in my WPML installation.

Do I need to upgrade WPML in order to translation a navigation block menu? Or am I missing something?

Hello There,
Thanks for contacting WPML Support.

I understand what you're looking for. If you're using a Block-based theme, The Navigation Menu block can only be translated from the "WPML > Translation Management" section. To understand the process, please check this guide: https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/translating-content-created-using-gutenberg-editor/translating-sites-that-use-full-site-editing/#translating-menus-in-site-editor-templates

Now, if the Translation Management is not available for you, you might be using an older version of the WPML Plugin. Please make sure to install the latest version of WPML(V: 4.6.9) and String Translation(V: 3.2.9) on your site. You can download the latest version of both plugins from your WPML.ORG account(https://wpml.org/account/downloads/)

Once they are installed and activated, you can proceed to translate the Navigation menu block by following the guide I've shared above.

Please let me know if the information above helps or if you need further assistance in this matter. I will be happy to help.

Best regards,
Prosenjit

Hi Prosenjit,

Thank you for the reply! That is what I thought. Just to double chec - Translation Managment is not available for the WPML Multilingual Blog subscription I have now, so in order to translate a block theme, I have to upgrade, is that correct?

Best,

Will

OK, I have the upgrade and all of the necessary tools are now available, thanks Prosenjit.

I think it would be very useful to make it clear to users in the documentation that the basic (blog) version of WPML does not work with recent wordpress themes or the block editor. I wasted a lot of time looking for a solution that wasn't there.

I'll mark this as resolved.
