Background of the issue:
I work for a translation agency and I am trying to help our client with the localisation of their website into French. They have already translated it using automatic translation, but the quality is not good and they approached my company to review the MT output. We asked them to export the content as XLIFF files so that we could process them in our translation tool.

Symptoms:
It seems that importing the reviewed French XLIFF files does not overwrite the machine translated content. There are no error messages associated with the import.

Questions:
Is it because the French pages already have the completed status?
Is there a way to remove this status so that the imported XLIFF files get taken into account?

First, before exporting the XLIFFs the client needs to create new translation jobs.

Then the XLIFFs will need to get uploaded again while those jobs are in progress.

The problem is, that if a translation status is completed, then WPML will not expect that the translation needs an update.

So, usually, the client would need to update the original content, create a job, and then export the XLIFF. Once the XLIFF comes back the file needs to be uploaded to the same job, otherwise it will not work.

Second, the Advanced Translation Editor, which is responsible for the automatic translation, can not read translations that are imported from XLIFF files. This means, that even if the import is successful, then the Advanced Translation Editor will still show the old translations.

If XLIFF export and import are used, then the client should use the Classic Translation Editor for all contents, but this will also mean, that he can no longer use automatic translation, translation memory, and the glossary.

Thank you for the reply. Can you confirm that existing translations obtained via the Advanced Editor will not be lost if the client switches to the Classic Editor? My client translated their website themselves into Japanese using the Advanced Editor, and the Japanese pages have been published. We would now like to use the XLIFF export/import feature for the French translation but don't want to break anything on the Japanese side.

If you switch from Advanced Translation Editor (ATE) to Classic Translation Editor (CTE) the translations will not be lost. The user will be able to edit the old translations from ATE inside CTE.

Only if later on you switch from Classic Translation Editor to Advanced Translation Editor, then the translations need to be done again.
