Dear WPML Support Team,

I am writing to report a performance issue I've encountered with the WPML plugin on my WordPress site. I've noticed that when the WPML plugin is active, the page loading time for editing posts and menus significantly increases. Specifically, the loading time extends from an average of 3 seconds to approximately 15 seconds.

This issue has been a persistent challenge, and I have been unable to find a solution. After thorough testing and observation, it seems evident that the problem is directly related to the WPML plugin. I have not experienced this delay with any other plugin or theme on my site.

I am seeking your assistance to address this issue. Could you please provide guidance or a solution to improve the loading time when WPML is active?

Hi there,

I will add the first reply before this ticket is assigned to one of my colleagues.

Make sure you have a backup before following the steps below.

For now, there are a few practical steps that you can take to see if you experience improvement on your website.

1- Follow the steps below and deactivate the Adjust ID function if your theme does not need that:

https://wpml.org/documentation/support/creating-multilingual-wordpress-themes/language-dependent-ids/

2- Go to WordPress Dashboard > WPML > Settings > Post Types Translation and set the post types that you do not want a translation for to "Not Translatable".

3- Troubleshooting:

Go to "WordPress Dashboard > WPML > Support > Troubleshooting (link)".
- Click the buttons annotated in the screenshot below one by one and wait for each button process to finish:
https://wpml.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/7206941-buttons.png

Also click the optimize String Translation table button and finally click the Clear Invalid string button which will redirect you to a page that you can delete unused/invalid strings.

4- Go to wpml > string translation and scroll down and make sure the “Track where strings appear on the site” option is off.

5- Always disable caching and security plugins when testing, especially if there is more than one caching or security plugin used at the same time.

6- Deactivate WPML Media plugin if you do not translate the image themselves. If you need to translate only the alt text and description you do not need the WPML Media

7- Deactivate WPML CMS Nav if you do not use it

Get back to us with the result and we will follow up.

Thanks.

Hi Pawel,

It could be a slowness issue caused by one of the plugins not being compatible with WPML or some theme code. Can you please follow the next steps and let me know how it goes?
❌ IMPORTANT: Please backup your database and website before proceeding ❌

1. Update WPML plugins to the latest version, specifically WooCommerce Multilingual 5.3.1 (https://wpml.org/faq/install-wpml/#checking-for-updates)
2. Install the Query Monitor plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/query-monitor/).
3. Check the load time and the number of queries in the top bar. Load time has "s" and queries "Q".
4. Disable all WPML plugins and check load time and the number of queries.
5. Disable all other plugins and leave active only WPML plugins, switch to a WordPress default theme. Check again.
Please let me know how it goes and share each result with me and read more on the documentation https://wpml.org/tutorials/2019/10/analyze-performance-issues-with-query-monitor/

Look forward to your reply.
Thanks

The problem mainly occurs when updating the content of posts. Before the tests, we have this result: hidden link

After disabling additional plugins "WPML String Translation" etc:

after disabled all WPML plugins:

Hi,

I would like to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site to take a better look at the issue. It would be better to have a testing site where the issue is replicated. Your next reply is set to private to share the info.

❌ IMPORTANT: Please backup your database and website before proceeding ❌
You can use this plugin to create the backup: https://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/
✙ I would need your permission to de-activate and re-activate Plugins and the Theme to change configurations on the site if needed. This is also a reason the backup is critical.

Look forward to your reply.
Thanks

Hello Pawel,

Thank you for the access.

This is Waqas and I'll be handling this issue until Long is on vacation (this week).

I was able to login and observe a little bit. I am still looking into it and 'll get back to you accordingly.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

I did some tests like:

- Theme 2024 / Plugins: All including WPML's active
- Theme 2024 / Plugins: WooCommerce, WPML, WCML, ST, WP Bakery
- Theme ShopKeeper (Parent) / Plugins: WooCommerce, WPML, WCML, ST, WP Bakery
- Theme ShopKeeper (Child) / Plugins: WooCommerce, WPML, WCML, ST, WP Bakery

I found that even with a few plugins but the ShopKeeper (Child) theme active, the load times are high (see attached).

This theme isn't on our compatibility list (https://wpml.org/theme/?wpv_view_count=119967&wpv-theme-category=0&wpv_post_search=Shopkeeper&wpv-wpcf-recommendation-flag=&wpv_filter_submit=Search), so we can not be sure if it should be causing this problem. However, I see that the parent theme has the same results as 2024 theme.

So probably you may need to check with, if haven't already:
- standard WP theme (2024)
- the parent theme (ShopKeeper)
- with WPML plugins only
--- then activating other plugins one by one and seeing where the load time starts going higher

Please let me know your findings.

the time for saving changes on the website is the same for the "Shopkeeper" and "Storefront" themes.

With the same plugin list:
-WooCommerce
-WooCommerce Multilingual & Multicurrency
-WPBakery Page Builder
-WPML Multilingual CMS
-WPML String Translation

Hi,

After investigating further, I see the issue related to the Advanced Translation Editor on your site. I go to WPML > Settings > Translation Editor > Switch to Classic Translation Editor and the loading speed looks better. Please check the screenshots attached.
I'm asking our 2nd tier support about this issue and update you here when I have something to share.

Thanks.

Hi,

Our 2nd tier supporter sees the SQL query below is running many times:

UPDATE rxcwpx_options
SET option_value = '1702881107'
WHERE option_name = '_transient_timeout_wpml_sso_user_e9536bf6bf_1bcc2c43e0e9cb61182ad4846a751c94c31863adab9c98c3bb61aee0f33c68f6'

Please contact your hosting support, ask them to disable the object caching and recheck this issue.

Thanks.

Changing to the "Classic Translate Editor" actually speeded up the loading of edited posts
However, I still think there is a problem.

Regarding the SQL query, object-cache is disabled on the website.

Hi,

You are checking the issue on your live site, not the staging site that you shared. Please confirm that the object cache is disabled on the staging site also.

According to your screenshot, I see you are using the Network tab of the browser to check the loading time. It could be slow down by some reasons like internet speed, domain resolution, hosting ... You can check the page loading on your hosting only again with the Query Monitor as I mentioned above:
- With WPML
- Without WPML
on the staging site to find what causes the issue and apply the solution to your live site later.

Look forward to your reply.
Thanks

Do you know anything about these SQL queries?

UPDATE rxcwpx_options
SET option_value = '1702881107'
WHERE option_name = '_transient_timeout_wpml_sso_user_e9536bf6bf_1bcc2c43e0e9cb61182ad4846a751c94c31863adab9c98c3bb61aee0f33c68f6'
