This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: There was a confusion about saving the options 'Duplicate existing media for translated content' and 'Duplicate the featured images for translated content' within the WPML settings.
Solution: We recommend understanding that these options are not typical settings that can be toggled on or off. Instead, they are part of the setup wizard for WPML's media translation module. These options appear when you initiate the wizard by clicking the "Start" button. Once the wizard is completed, these options do not persist like other settings on the page. This behavior is by design and is expected. For more details, you can refer to our documentation on media translation here: WPML Media Translation.

This is what Kisnta reported me:
"Alright, it seems that the WPML plugin is trying to modify htaccess file upon saving that change in the settings, but kindly note that htaccess is not in use on NGINX server.
Here's what I found in the logs:
Before proceeding further, may I ask you to try the following?
IMPORTANT: Take full backup of your website and database beforehand. It is highly advised to try the following on a staging/dev site first, so your live website isn't compromised.
- Deactivate all plugins except WPML and its addons and check for the issue.
- Activate each plugin one-by-one, while keeping check on the issue after a plugin is activated. This way you'll be able to pinpoint a plugin having a conflict (or problem), if any.
- If the problem persists, repeat the above steps with a default theme of WordPress (i.e. 2021 or 2023).
Please let me know and I'll try my best to help you further on the matter.
I need to take a closer look at your site. So I request temporary access (WP-Admin and FTP), preferably to a test site where the problem has been replicated.
Your next answer will be private, to share this information safely.
Also provide detailed steps to reproduce the issue and links to pages in admin and on frontend.
IMPORTANT: Please take a complete backup of the site to avoid data loss. I may need to activate/deactivate plugins also.
Our team suggests that these aren't actual settings which can be turned off or on, but are "options for the wizard" which runs when you click the "Start" button (see attached).
