Background of the issue:
I translated an entire article using the String Translation section in WPML. Afterward, I enabled auto-translate credits.

Symptoms:
The auto-translate feature overwrote all my manual translations with DeepL translations, which are completely different.

Questions:
Why does enabling auto-translate overwrite existing translations in the String Translation section?
How do I prevent auto-translate from overwriting my manual translations in the future?

Also is there any way I can disable auto-translate for all strings and within the string area have a button where I can choose to either auto-translate or manually translate?

When a complete article is translated in the string translation area, how do I get this to register in the main article that the translation is complete also?

I'm really not happy with this overwriting issue, I spent 2 hours of my day doing these translations only to have them wiped with completely different and nowhere near as accurate copies. 1/4 of my work day is wasted.

Hello,

Thanks for contacting us.

While you wait for my colleague to take over the ticket, let me try to help you with the issue quickly.

First, you should not use String translation to translate content, it is only to be used for translating strings coming from theme/plugin files and theme/plugin settings. If you use it, your translation will be overwritten each time you update your page.

For translating pages/post and etc, you should use WPML editor or automatic translation. To choose and switch mode you can do that from WPML > Settings.

Then send the pages for translation from WPMl > Translation Managment. From there you can choose to translate yourself via WPML Editor or automatically translate.

Please check the next guide:

- https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/advanced-translation-editor/

Let us know how it goes and if any other questions.
Regards,
Drazen
