The issue has been escalated to our development team.

Workaround:

1) Go to WPML > String Translation and in the bottom section enable "Look for strings while pages are rendered".

2) Translate now the custom menu items again inside String Translation. Make sure to edit the fields and then save them. A popup message should appear on the top right, that the translation was saved.

3) Run WPML > WP Menus Sync.

4) Disable the option "Look for strings while pages are rendered" again.
