Background of the issue:
I am using Download Monitor to manage site downloads on hidden link. We can translate single file links but encounter issues with shortcodes. Specifically, we use the shortcode [downloads category="plumbin" orderby "date"] to display a list of files by category. This works on the English page but not on the Welsh page. All files are in English, and we want to allow downloads on the Welsh pages as well.

Symptoms:
In Welsh, the shortcode is ignored and does not display anything, although it is present in the WP editor.

Questions:
Why does the shortcode not display files on the Welsh page?
How can we ensure downloads are available on the Welsh pages using WPML?

While one of my teammates handles your ticket, I will provide you with initial debugging steps.

Have you tried to put the shortcode with the correct category for the second language? For example, [downloads category="plumbin-welsh" orderby "date"]

If this still doesn't work, please show us how you added the shortcodes and where the problem can be seen.

First, please update your WPML plugin and add-ons to the latest version, 4.7.1, to benefit from the latest bug fixes and improvements. This may not necessarily resolve your problem; however, we need to work on the newest code available to troubleshoot the issue best.

You can check the latest released versions under "My Account -> Downloads" on this site. Instructions to update can be found here: http://wpml.org/faq/install-wpml/

If you do not see the updates, you might need to click the Check for updates button in the Plugins → Add New Plugin → Commercial tab.

Please remember to backup your database before you proceed.

We have had a note from Downloads that says we have to duplicate our file list and set the new files to a Welsh category, we have tested this and the list works, but the shortcut for the new files doesn't download.

We seem to have two distinct issues:
Download Shortcodes:

Welsh page list:

Clicking the link above gives:

Apparently Downloads needs a Welsh file to be picked up by a Welsh Category
We have one file duplicated

1. "To download click the link below" does not translate, it’s a Text Pattern
2. The Download doesn't work.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting the support. I'm assigned this ticket and 'll try my best to help you on the matter.

I've created a fresh sandbox site at hidden link (one-click login) with WPML and Download Monitor plugins installed.

Can you please configure WPML as you'd in your site, activate Download Monitor plugin and then reproduce the above mentioned scenario? So I can then check further for the issue.

Please take your time and let me know when you're ready.

Regards.

I think we might have solved the issue, we could recreate the issue in the test site and found it related to using Patterns on the download links inside an Accordion. The text box pattern doesn't seem to want to translate - so we are replacing the patterns with single text boxes with the same text in and believe they will automatically translate.
Once we have edited them all we will see if we still need help. Thanks so far.

We still have the notice on the dev site - The WPML Media Translation setup is almost complete. Click here to finish the setup. which was left after WPML had access and edited the install. What do we do next ?

Thank you for the updates and glad you figured out the issue. However, please consider followings:

- Translating Patterns: You can translate these from WPML -> Translation Management dashboard, by looking for the relevant section, selecting the patterns you want to translate and send for translation or translate yourself.

- WPML Media: If it says about it, please click to finish the setup as advised on the notice.

Since original issue is resolved, either by your modified workflow or translating patterns, please feel free to close this ticket.

However, if you need more help on translating patterns and/or WPML media, I recommend opening a separate ticket/chat because as per forum policy we can only handle one issue per ticket/chat. So you can get more to the point help, without mixing up several issues in one long ticket.

Hi

This is very strange, we have this Downloads shortcut in our dev site and your test site and it behaves differently:

[downloads category="plumbin" orderby "date"]

In the test site the category is both a welsh and an english one
the download Category page does not differentiate between the languages, see image Screenshot 2025-03-26 170245 and dev - Screenshot 2025-03-26 170351

in the dev site we have a Welsh category "plymio" and the above

We get the list of files to display and download on the Welsh site.

On our dev site after emailing the Downloads team they told us to use duplicate files.
We have the welsh files set to welsh categories and they do not download, we get 404 error.
I have it set to one duplicate and set to a welsh category and it fails to display the list in Welsh page
English page - Screenshot 2025-03-26 170621
Wlesh page - doesn't display list - Screenshot 2025-03-26 170653
Welsh block - Screenshot 2025-03-26 170719

We thought we had a solution but something in the background between last week and this messed up

Thank you for the updates.

Looks like the plugin "Download Monitor" requires proper compatibility with WPML. I searched our forums and found a couple of previous reports and this plugin isn't compatible with WPML (and we don't have on our list as well).

I've tried the following in our hidden link">Sandbox Site:

- Set plugin's custom post type to translatable.
- Set plugin's taxonomies to translatable.
- Set related custom fields to translatable.
- Translated "download" endpoint in String Translation.
- Translated category.
- Translated the "Download".
- Updated page translation to have the translated shortcode with translated Welsh category.
--- The last 2 I did by switching from top admin menu, because ATE does not receive this information, so this is also another way of translating content and it should surely work.
- Even tried this solution from an old forum ticket.

All screenshots are attached for reference.

Translations work fine, but on hidden link">translated page download does not work.

I recommend you to contact the plugin author and request a compatibility update. WPML offers very useful information for developers aiming to make their themes/plugins compatible. Please see https://wpml.org/documentation/support/ and https://wpml.org/documentation/support/achieving-wpml-compatibility-for-your-themes-and-plugins/ for details.

Theme and plugin authors are welcome to join WPML’s Go Global program, which helps them make their code multilingual ready. Together with WPML’s compatibility team, they can test and confirm that their theme or plugin works with WPML. See https://wpml.org/documentation/support/go-global-program/ for details and you can refer your theme/plugin provider to this as well.
