[Resolved] Set up WPML with a different domain for the french version of my website.
This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: The client was unable to validate a newly purchased domain for the French version of their website during the WPML setup. Additionally, they encountered issues with missing translations and incorrect content display on specific pages of the French site. Solution: We recommended switching to 'Different Languages in Directories' and finalizing the configuration setup. After this, the client should switch to 'different domains per languages', add their URL, uncheck the 'validate on save' option, and save the settings. For the content issues, we accessed the site and manually updated the affected pages by switching to the secondary language in the WP editor and clicking update. We also synchronized the taxonomies from within WPML to fix the footer display issues. For the missing translations, we advised verifying that all strings are fully translated in WPML->String Translation and checking the source of these strings. For further details on manual translation and theme compatibility, please review the following documentation:
If the solution provided here does not resolve your issue or seems outdated, we highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If further assistance is needed, please open a new support ticket at https://wpml.org/forums/forum/english-support/.
This is the technical support forum for WPML - the multilingual WordPress plugin.
Everyone can read, but only WPML clients can post here. WPML team is replying on the forum 6 days per week, 22 hours per day.
Background of the issue:
I have been a WPML user for several years for my website arnaudhomburger-realtor.com. I just installed WPML on my new website arnaudhomburger.com and I am trying to set up my WPML with a translation from English into French, using different domains. I am currently using the domain arnaudhomburger.com for my website in English, and I just purchased the domain arnaudhomburger.fr for the French version.
Symptoms:
The WPML setup wizard requests to fill out the domain name for the French version but it says the domain is invalid.
Questions:
Why does the WPML setup wizard say the domain arnaudhomburger.fr is invalid?
Could you help me set up WPML with different domains for each language?
- Switch to 'Different Languages in Directories' and finalize the configuration setup
- Once finished go to WPML->languages and now switch to "different domains per languages" -> add your URL -> uncheck the box option to "validate on save" and save.
In addition, I see that many translation are missing on my website french version. The visuals of several pages are affected. I don't understand how this is possible while Houzez theme and yourself mention everywhere online that you have a great compatibility. I am hoping to get help from you in order to have a perfect version of my website in french language. Thank you in advance!
Glad to hear the issue was resolved with the help of your dev team!
I would like to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site to test the issue.
(preferably to a test site where the problem has been replicated if possible)
**Before we proceed It is necessary to take FULL BACKUP of your database and your website. Providing us with access, you agree that a backup has been taken **
I often use the Duplicator plugin for this purpose: http://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/
You will find the needed fields for this below the comment area when you log in to leave your next reply. The information you enter is private which means only you and I have access to it.
NOTE: If access to the live site is not possible and the staging site does not exist please provide me with a duplicator package created with the duplicator plugin.
Also, regarding the footer, I can see that this content is pulled from Houzez taxonomies (property city and property type) using a widget.
I was able to resolve by synchronizing the taxonomies from within WPML->Support->Syncrhonize taxonomies for Properties. -- they were missing their assigned translated properties
Thank you so much for your support, it's very much appreciated as I started to really worry about the issues I was encountering with the french version of my website.
I see that the page "Affaires passées" on the french version of my website now shows well. I will just need to fix the slider as you said.
I tried to follow the steps you suggested to resolve the same issue on the page "À louer", but I can't follow them, I am sorry. Could you please explain the steps again, with more details if possible, or modify the page directly?
Thank you for your help! This morning, I can no longer access the french version of my website, whether by searching the french url on my browser or by clicking the the language switcher.
How can I translate those parts of my website (see screenshots attached) into french?
The shown page on the screenshot is the property details of one of my properties. Here is a url of a property detail page: hidden link
I am looking forward to be able to translate all of these!
I am not sure why but I remember the translation of my other website using Astra theme was so so much easier than with Houzez theme, I had not much to do with Astra. With Houzez, I feel like I have been spending hours. Why do you think is this? I hope it was easier 😅
Here is my other website with Astra if you want to see: hidden link
The previously shared details are no longer working for me so I was not able to further investigate, however, please try the following:
- Go to WPML->String Translation-> Search for the strings such as "Tour Type", "Date", etc.
- Verify that all instances of these strings are 100% translated.
Also, verify that the strings from these modules originated from the Houzez theme.
The Houzez theme is compatible with WPML, but it is more complex than Astra. I assume this is why there seem to be more touchpoints in comparison to Astra.
Just in case I will share again the documentation for the theme and WPML:
Thank you so much for your assistance! I followed the steps above and I was able to translate more content on my website, it's starting to look good! However, still need your assistance on this => Please see the link to a short screencast:
