This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client was experiencing issues with the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE) in WPML where list items were not translating correctly and were appearing in a single line instead of individually. Additionally, certain custom checkbox fields were not being picked up for translation.

Solution:
1. We made a minor edit to the original post and saved it, prompting WPML to recognize that the translation needed an update.
2. We switched to an older version of ATE and saved the changes.
3. We purged the cache to ensure the changes took effect.
4. For the custom checkbox fields not translating, we instructed the client to:
- Use the WordPress Editor to edit a record containing the items.
- Navigate to 'Multilingual content setup' and click on 'Show system fields'.
- Set the fields like _custom-checkbox-2, _custom-checkbox-32, and _custom-checkbox-4 to 'Translate'.
- Make a minor edit to the original post/listing and save it.
- Update/add the translation to see the fields available for translation.
5. For fields related to open hours, we set them to 'copy' to ensure they correctly reflect across translations.

If these steps do not resolve the issue or if the solution seems outdated, we recommend checking the related known issues, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If the problem persists, please open a new support ticket.

Background of the issue:
I am trying to use the advanced translator in WPML to translate content on my site hidden link. I have done this many times before without issues.

Symptoms:
When I translate to another language, the interface of the advanced translator changed. Previously, each item in a list was translated one by one, but now the entire list is in one line and it publishes on one line.

Questions:
Why has the interface of the advanced translator changed?
How can I revert to the previous behavior where each list item is translated one by one?
I attach 2 screenshoots; one in Swedish which is the orginal language which is correct and one translated to English where the list is on one line

I’m sorry that you ran into trouble with this.

We are aware of this issue, and it will be fixed shortly in the next release of the WPML Advanced Translation Editor. As a temporary solution, you can switch to the previous version of the translation editor when you open a translation. I have attached the screenshot.

Please test using the previous version and see if it helps.

Thank you,
Mateus

Hi again,
I tried this but still the list items are on the same line when I translate and on the translated page. And we can't wait for your next release because we are soon going to start selling listing on our website so what can we do?

I attach 3 screenshots, 1 how it should look (this is in Swedish the default language), 1 from how it looks in the advance translator and finally the 1 how it looks at the page of the English translation so you can see that's not working

Thank you,
Annika

Hello Annika,

I would like to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site to take better look at the issue. You will find the needed fields for this below the comment area when you log in to leave your next reply. The information you will enter is private which means only you and I can see and have access to it.

Our Debugging Procedures

I will be checking various settings in the backend to see if the issue can be resolved. Although I won't be making changes that affect the live site, it is still good practice to backup the site before providing us access. In the event that we do need to debug the site further, I will duplicate the site and work in a separate, local development environment to avoid affecting the live site.

Privacy and Security Policy

We have strict policies regarding privacy and access to your information. Please see:

Hello Annika,

Thank you for sharing that access.

I made a small change to the original post and saved it so WPML identified that the translation needed an update.

Then I updated the translation, making sure to switch to the older version of ATE and save it.

I purged the cache available and tested the translated property and it looks like it is showing properly now, please check the screenshot.

Can you please test it again to confirm that it is working as expected now?

Thank you,
Mateus

Thank you, I see it works now but what was the small change you did to the original post, so I know what I need to do to all the rest which is wrong?

Thank you,
Annika

Hello Annika,

I added an empty space and saved the original post. I saved the translation inside the translation editor.

However, upon further review, it looks like there was another step that I took that was the real reason behind the fix. Initially I believed it to be unnecessary and that updating the translation corrected it.

I took another look at this issue and confirmed that in order to fix it, it is necessary to open the translation in the front end and then click on 'edit listing'. When the WordPress editor loads, you manually add the word break to those lines and save it.

However, I double-check it and unfortunately it only works if you keep using the WordPress to update those translation moving forward, if you try to use the translation editor again, even the old version, and save the translation, the issue happens again.

I suspect this could be a compatibility or conflict issue. To pinpoint the exact cause, we need to isolate variables by replicating the issue in a sandbox environment.

Login link: hidden link

Here's what is needed to be done:

1- Install Essential Components Only: In the sandbox login link provided above, please install your theme and only the plugins necessary to replicate the issue. Avoid importing the entire site.

2- Set Up the Page and Configurations: Mirror your current setup that's causing the issue, focusing on this specific issue, we only need the site to be partially replicated up to a point where we can debug the problem.

3- Notify Us Once Done: After replicating the issue in the sandbox, inform us through this ticket so we can proceed with further analysis.

The goal here is to identify if the problem is indeed a compatibility issue, reproducing it in a controlled environment.

We appreciate your cooperation in this matter. Let us know once you've set up the sandbox.

Best,
Mateus

Hello Annika,

I understand the inconvenience this issue has caused. Initially, we believed the problem was related to the new version of the WPML Advanced Translation Editor. However, after switching back to the old version and seeing the issue persist, it became clear that the problem lies elsewhere.

To identify the root cause, it's essential to replicate the issue in a controlled environment. This helps us determine whether it's a compatibility or conflict issue with other components on your site.

You don't need to install every plugin, just the essential ones needed to reproduce the issue where the text appears on the same line. This focused approach will allow us to isolate and address the problem more effectively.

Please proceed with setting up the sandbox environment to the best of your ability, ensuring that the issue with the text appears. Once done, notify us through this ticket, and we will continue our investigation.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Best regards,
Mateus

Thank you for your fast answer. Could I do a staging of the website on my hosting and you can have a look at that? And try what ever you need.

Also important with this installation is that it should be on a Apache server which it's now.

Please let me know if that's ok?

Thanks,
Annika

Sorry for all my messages but comes up things all the time. I just remebered that in the same time this happened was when I disable automatic translation. I did this because suddenly you couldn't decide if you wanted to translate automatic or not and everything was just translated automatic and want how it was that you choosed.

I don't know if this could have something to do with our problems

Hello Annika,

Thank you for providing with the access to the staging site.

In there, switching to the old ATE version seems to have fixed it, please check my demonstration video:

hidden link

I followed these steps:

- Edit any translation just to launch ATE
- Click on the gear and disable the big segment options and save it
- Switch to the old version of ATE
- Pick one listing having the issue with the properties in the same line
- Edit the Swedish version of that list and add an empty space anywhere in the list and save it
- Edit the English translation and confirm that the properties are placed in separate fields and save it

Please give it a try and tell me how it goes.
Mateus
