[Waiting for user feedback] Getting errors on install
This is the technical support forum for WPML - the multilingual WordPress plugin.
Everyone can read, but only WPML clients can post here. WPML team is replying on the forum 6 days per week, 22 hours per day.
Elementor users - please update WPML to the latest version to maintain compatibility. More details here - https://wpml.org/changelog/2024/12/wpml-4-6-15-critical-update-for-elementor-sites/
Background of the issue:
I installed WPML on the site once, but there were some errors that needed to be fixed so I tried to roll back the site and start over. Now I keep getting a message after I install the WPML plugins. I've contacted my hosting company and they said the folder that needs writeable permissions was not appearing in the wp-content folder. They have also done all they could on their end with increasing site memory and attempting to manually add the folder and the issue persisted. Link to a page where the issue can be seen: hidden link
Symptoms:
WPML String Translation uses .mo files instead of database calls. WPML needs to generate these .mo files in order for translations to appear on the front-end. However, the folder that should hold these .mo files is not open for writing. Please use your admin control panel or an FTP program to make the following folder writeable: /nas/content/live/ellugar/wp-content/languages/wpml
THE FOLDER IS NOT EVEN BEING CREATED, EVIDENTLY.
Questions:
How can I make the folder writeable to resolve the error?
What steps should I take if the hosting company cannot fix the folder permissions?
HOW CAN I FIX THE UPLOAD SO THAT THE FOLDER IS CREATED?
before your ticket is assigned to one of my colleagues, please allow me to walk you through some initial debugging steps. This will help speed up the support process.
If the writable permissions are incorrect (especially the owner, not only CHMOD), the server might not be able to create the necessary folder for WPML. You can try manually creating the folder path yourself and check if it gets populated with the required files.
Thanks, but we already tried that and it didn't work.
The first time I did the install, I did not have this problem. But because there were some things that I felt I needed to fix, I did a site restore to before I installed WPML and then every subsequent attempt at installing produced this error.
I will need to closely examine your website. Therefore, I will require temporary access (WP-Admin and FTP) to a test site where the problem has been replicated, if possible. This will enable me to provide better assistance and determine if any configurations need to be modified.
Please note that it is important to have a backup for security purposes and to prevent any potential data loss. You can use the UpdraftPlus plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/) to fulfill your backup requirements.
Your upcoming reply will be treated with confidentiality and will only be visible to you and me.
✙ To resolve the issue, I may need your consent to deactivate and reactivate plugins and the theme, as well as make configuration changes on the site if necessary. This emphasizes the significance of having a backup.
The error message only appears when you go through the initial set up process. But you can see something is wrong if you try to translate a page and nothing happens. When you click on "Review" on the pages tab, it redirects to comments and you will see on the front end that there are no other languages appearing in the language switcher.
I ran some troubleshooting options here hidden link and it should resync the translations.
Could you try triggering the automatic translation now and see if it works correctly now? Also, the accommodation CPT is set as "Not translatable" as shown in the attached screenshot here hidden link
You might want to enable translation if you wish to translate it to another language.
