Background of the issue:
I am experiencing a significant issue with the Multilingual Plugin on my website, which uses both Dutch (NL) and English (EN) languages. The plugin has created two pages for each category, one in Dutch and one in English. When I disable the plugin, the issue is resolved. Google then correctly picks up the NL canonical URL for NL pages and the EN canonical URL for EN pages.

Symptoms:
For NL pages, Google is considering the English URL as its canonical URL. For EN pages, Google is correctly picking up the English canonical URL. Despite the source code for the NL pages correctly showing the NL URL as the canonical URL, Google is not indexing the NL pages properly.

Questions:
Could you please assist in resolving this issue with Google indexing the NL pages correctly?

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm a bit confused by your statement: "When I disable the plugin, the issue is resolved. Google then correctly picks up the NL canonical URL for NL pages and the EN canonical URL for EN pages."

Could you clarify which plugin you disabled? If you disabled the WPML plugin, your NL pages/posts/categories will not function/open, and you won't be able to open these pages or see them in the backend/frontend.

Additionally, are you using any SEO plugins like RankMath or Yoast to generate a sitemap? The sitemap should show which links are submitted to Google Search Console for crawling by Google Bots.

I suggest checking your SEO plugin configuration to ensure that you haven't misconfigured or blocked some "translated" taxonomies from being crawled by Google.
